ourists visiting Yogyakarta between Feb. 1 and 28 will be able to enjoy Festival Jogja Heboh (Yogyakarta Thrilling Festival) which boasts hotel room promotions, cheap markets, a culinary festival and music performances.

"There's a lot of discounted offers for those staying at the hundreds of Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association [PHRI] members in Yogyakarta," said the festival's committee chairman Arif Effendi in Yogyakarta on Thursday as quoted by tempo.co.

The discounted offers are said to range from 10 to 60 percent, said Arif. "There are 200 PHRI hotels in Yogyakarta in total that are participating in the program, including star and non-star hotels."

The city itself is home to around 800 hotels.

Aside from cheaper room rates, some participating hotels will also offer dinner promotions.

February is known as the month with the fewest tourist arrivals, with hotel occupancy rates usually around 30 percent, said Arif. "Hopefully this festival can help boost tourism in Yogyakarta, increasing the occupancy rate up to 10 to 20 percent."

Previously, Yogyakarta PHRI chairman Istijab M. Danunagoro said the city's hotel occupancy rate in early January reached 70 percent for those located in the city center, and 60 percent for hotels outside the city center. "So creative events are needed to boost tourist arrivals," he added.

Aside from hotel promotions, Istijab said members of the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agencies (ASITA) in Yogyakarta would also offer discounted travel packages and promote various new destinations in the city. (kes)
