ndonesia is demanding that all nations with close ties to Israel use “the furthest extent of their influence and ability” to bring about a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, after Israeli forces launched an assault early on Monday on the Indonesia Hospital in the enclave’s north that has killed at least eight civilians and left thousands more trapped inside the besieged health compound.

Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi issued “the harshest of condemnations” on the attack after arriving in China as part of an international diplomatic delegation whose mission is to persuade the United Nations Security Council to impose a cease-fire and allow for the unimpeded delivery of aid.

“This attack clearly violates international humanitarian law,” Retno proclaimed in a video statement from Beijing on Monday.

As a fervent supporter of Palestinian statehood, Indonesia has no diplomatic relations with Israel.

Earlier that day, Israeli forces surrounded the Indonesian-funded health facility in Gaza and began a siege of the facility.

The bullets and explosives were targeted at the hospital’s top floors, according to the Medical Emergency Rescue Committee (MER-C) nonprofit that operates the facility, rendering evacuation attempts for those dead or alive impossible in certain parts of the building.

Retno said the Foreign Ministry was reaching out intensely through various channels in search of more information on the situation at the hospital but that the International Committee for the Red Cross and the World Health Organization had yet to respond.
