More than 1,600 scholarships are available annually for Indonesians interested in studying in the EU.

EU Ambassador to Indonesia Vincent Guerend said the scholarships aimed to provide students with resources to better shape their future.

"We hope it will help them further excel in their field of expertise and that upon returning to Indonesia they will be able to contribute to the development of their country. We also hope they will come back with good memories of Europe,” Guerend told The Jakarta Post during the EU Scholarship Fair in Medan, North Sumatra, on Wednesday.

The number of Indonesians studying in Europe is said to increase from year to year. "In 2015, more than 6,000 Indonesian students departed for Europe, bringing the total number of Indonesians studying in the continent to 9,000; this includes those with scholarships funded by the EU and the Indonesian government, as well as self-funded students," said Guerend.

In addition to sharing information at their booths, the exhibitors also gave presentations to visitors throughout the day.

A participant, Sekar, who graduated from North Sumatra University, said that among her favorite countries to study were Germany, the Netherlands and France.

The EU is set to organize another event in November, the European Higher Education Fair, in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Surabaya. (kes)
