T

he increasingly globalized world, enhanced by the ease of communication and transportation, have allowed people to have access to quality services, including medical treatment. That way, patients have more options for healthcare service providers.

In general, patients, particularly wealthy ones, choose a particular hospital, whether local or an overseas one, because it can ‘meet their expectation’, which means they desire for a hospital with more patient-oriented or patient-centered treatment instead of disease-centered treatment.

“They want to be served like a king as they come away with a positive experience. This can be served by a hospital with patient-centered care,” said Mandaya Healthcare Group President Director Dr. Ben Widaja.

Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri in the pipeline has been designed with Mandaya patient and family experience under which patients are seen as a holistic human being with complexities from an emotional, social or financial perspective, and so on, according to Ben.

Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri with innovative and high-tech design occupies an area of 55.000 m2 of the land area of 10.000 m2. The hospital is slated to be opened in mid-2021.

Ben, who studied and worked as a doctor in England for eight years and had many opportunities to visit other hospitals in several countries, said that the need for health services in Indonesia is still very high, especially the need for quality health services.

To align with the concept based on the understanding of the problems and expectations of patients and their families, the hospital has prepared the entire team, from doctors, nurses, medical support, even non-medical teams.

“We instill a basic understanding that our hospital is built on the foundation of ‘the patient and family experience’, which of course, includes an understanding of patient-centered care, not just diseases,” he says.

“Specialist doctors work in teams when treating patients. Often the patient's condition is quite complex and requires a multi-disciplinary approach and specialization, so we’ve built a communication channel between specialists through an integrated IT system,” he remarks.

He says that the paradigm shift in architectural design is also of paramount importance in realizing g this patient and family experience concept.

“As an example, we made emergency rooms private so only one patient occupies the room. To our knowledge, it is still very rare for hospitals to be designed like that, both in Indonesia and in the world.”

“The one-patient-one-room emergency room system makes patients and their families more comfortable. Medically, this arrangement is better because it avoids cross-infection. From a mental health perspective, it's also better because tragic events in one room won’t disturb the patient in the next room.

“The separate rooms with soundproof partitions will certainly create a better experience than spaces divided only by a sheet of curtains.

He says the CPU is the hospital another innovation in design. “In our CPU, we apply the one-patient-one-room standard with a very strict infection control system.”

“Visitors or patients' families can see patients in the ICU through a large window with a communication system, using switchable smart glass and intercom, without having to enter the ICU treatment area. This is to reduce the introduction of viruses and bacteria brought by visitors into the ICU area.”

The hospital’s outpatient rooms are divided into 14 clusters which separate healthy patients from patients who are infected. “Each cluster also has its own waiting room,” he says.

Healthy home

“The atmosphere or ambience of our hospital is more of a healthy home than a hospital. By combining the concepts of hospitals, malls, hotels, and residences, it comes to life as Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri,” says Ben whose hobbies include photography and technology.

Thanks to its concepts of patient and family experience and patient-centered care, coupled with the availability of comprehensive and sophisticated medical equipment, the hospital is able to draw in specialist doctors and sub-specialists to choose to develop the careers with Mandaya Royal Hospital.

“We have also instilled an understanding of the importance of collaboration and integration between disciplines and specializations in treating patients,” he says.

At a global level, the hospital is collaborating medically with some of the world's leading hospitals, one of which is Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals, London, UK, for heart and lung matters.

Royal Brompton is one of the top 10 hospitals in the world, especially for matters of the heart and lungs.

This collaboration comes in the form of knowledge sharing, training, joint diagnosis for challenging cases, or opinion sharing on laboratory, radiological, or other diagnostic research results.

With this world-class (from the UK and the United States) medical collaboration, patients can easily request a second opinion from our partner hospitals without having to leave Indonesia, or having to go through the hassle of changing hospitals, he says.

According to him, almost all our medical equipment is of the latest advancement in its respective technology, such as MRI, Mammogram with 3D Tomosynthesis, laboratory to Mandaya Alert 360o Concept and Clinical Decision Support System.

“IQon Spectral CT Scan with ambience experience, the first in Indonesia, is an advanced technology that can produce a better image for more accurate diagnosis,” he points out.

With innovative designs, advanced medical equipment and IT systems, along with a team of highly competent doctors, Mandaya Royal Hospital Puri is expected to be able to meet the Indonesian public’s needs for high-quality health facilities.
