he year 2021 marks 21 years since the University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNM) was established in Malaysia. The university has certainly come a long way — from its beginnings operating from a rented teaching space in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to occupying a lush 47.7-hectare campus in Semenyih, home to more than 5,500 students from across 85 countries.
With each passing year, UNM steadily grows from being the branch of a main campus to a global university with its own voice. This is perfectly exemplified in the university’s goal to be a university without borders.
Even when the world is juggling the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the economic, social and political challenges that will arise in the future, it is vital that people remain connected to each other at both local and global levels.
While being socially distanced physically is vital to curb the spread of the virus, technology has enabled people from across nations to maintain important conversations and collaborations across the world.
UNM’s insights in Malaysia have been crucial in supporting thinking in other parts of the world.
Online learning
An example of UNM’s innovations is in online learning and teaching. This is most apparent in March 2020, as the switch from traditional learning to online learning came rather suddenly and quickly. Despite the abrupt change of pace, UNM’s colleagues sourced for new and innovative ways to ensure that the delivery of lessons continue to run like clockwork.
The academics in the science and engineering faculties pioneered the use of the virtual laboratory platform Labster. The state-of-the-art, fully interactive online laboratory enabled students to carry out many of the assessed experiments required for their program through simulations from the safety of their own homes.
Meanwhile, the arts and sciences programs in UNM have seen some remarkable creative projects through collaborative online learning, with some of these amazing projects going on to win industry-sponsored competitions.
International research
In the same vein, UNM’s research has also transcended borders, with the work being carried out in Malaysia becoming of great value to not only colleagues in the United Kingdom and China but also in various parts of the world.
A prime example is UNM’s Asia Research Institute. This institute, which spans three campuses, links academics who are leaders in their respective fields to bring about new perspectives and ideas on various matters such as sustainability, connectivity, education, identity and rights.
In a statement, the UNM said it felt privileged to be in Malaysia, an important hub of the Southeast Asian region.
“And as we go forward in the coming decade, while battling many uncertainties, the work we carry out at University of Nottingham Malaysia will continue to be more than that of a branch campus. Being in Malaysia and personifying its spirit will help us to continue in shaping the university’s mission to ‘change the world for the better’.”
The University of Nottingham ranks 103 out of more than 1,000 universities across the world and 18 in the UK in the 2022 QS World University Rankings. The university’s wide range of programs are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate candidates through its specialist schools and departments under the Schools of Arts and Social Sciences, and Engineering and Science.
