tate-owned electricity firm PLN has signed 13 agreements and memorandums of understanding (MoU), further signifying its commitment to fulfilling the needs of the industrial sector and seeking new investments.

In total, PLN will supply 2,270 megavolt amperes (MVA) to a number of new clients, including PT Huadi Nickel-Alloy Indonesia, PT Stargate Mineral Asia, PT Aquila Cobalt Nickel, PT Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), PT Wahana Lestari Investama, PT Sampoerna Kayu and PT Gebe Industry Nickel. Also included in the agreement is a renewable energy certificate (REC) to be applied in PT Sumitomo Indonesia.

Representing Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) deputy of investment procurement Imam Soejoedi reiterated PLN’s mission to fulfill its customers’ electricity needs while providing the best services possible.

“These MoUs are a milestone for PLN, representing our biggest sale of electricity to date at 2,270 MVA,” he said during his keynote speech at the signing on Oct.29.

Imam noted that PLN is proactive in its approach to providing reliable electricity at competitive prices, especially with its position as a state-owned enterprise (SOE) that has been proven to be able to increase its capacity and capabilities to increase customer satisfaction.

“This is an excellent collaboration, as every investment requires high-quality electricity [...] The composition of economic growth is consumption, investments, as well as exports and imports. During these challenging times, investment is the only way to support growth,” he said.

During the same event, PLN enterprise and customer management director Bob Saril said PLN had positively contributed to the national economy by providing electricity supply to high-voltage customers.

“Electronic-based smelter technology is an option to support the entire production process. Keeping this in mind, it is hoped that the signing will be able to increase the synergy between PLN and industry players, especially in the rising industrial smelter industry,” he said.

Currently, PLN is experiencing a surplus in most of its electrical systems, with the normal surplus amount being at over 40 percent. The amount of surplus electricity will be increased with the power plants currently in construction. Part of the 35 gigawatt (GW) mega project, the power plants will supply approximately 17.9 GW of electricity, equivalent to 50 percent of the current surplus.

“The surplus forces PLN to innovate in building collaborations and designing innovations to become more in line with industry needs and demand. We create innovation in our service to build trust and synergy with industry players so as to build the economy,” Bob said.

A number of companies have also started the push toward new and renewable energy through PLN’s REC, which allows them to easily purchase and gain international recognition over their use of existing renewable energy in Indonesia.

At the moment, PLN’s renewable energy power plants have a capacity of 7,936 MW.

Southeast Sulawesi Governor H. Ali Mazi expressed his appreciation for PLN’s support of the province’s administration, recalling that when he first became governor in 2003, Southeast Sulawesi only had a total energy of 5 MW.

“Today, after I’ve been reelected as governor once again, alhamdulillah [praise be to God], every household’s electricity needs have been fulfilled. There have been no more blackouts,” he said, adding that the opportunity was PLN’s commitment to reducing the electricity gap in the region, especially for industrial needs, which have a large potential.
