ommunications and Information Technology Minister Johnny G. Plate has warned everyone to stay alert and maintain strict health protocol discipline to prevent new COVID-19 waves from starting. He said the current increase in cases of COVID-19 in European countries must be considered a valuable lesson so that people are more cautious.

“The government has asked the people to stay alert and maintain health protocol discipline  to prevent new COVID-19 waves,” Johnny said on Saturday. He explained that the statement was made following the COVID-19 National Task Force’s announcement that it had witnessed increasing numbers in new confirmed cases in at least nine provinces, including Lampung, West Java, East Java, Banten, Bali, North Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku and Papua. He added that the increasing infection rate must be stopped while the numbers were still considerably low.

“All related stakeholders must maintain the ongoing decreasing trend,” he said.

He asked that everyone paid attention to the valuable lessons offered from the recent increase in COVID-19 cases seen in Germany, Croatia and Slovenia, as well as the country’s own experience last year when it loosened public mobility restrictions without it being accompanied by strict health protocol implementation, which finally triggered the soaring COVID-19 cases.

“I hope that we can see how we could fall into the same trap, loosening our health protocol discipline could lead us directly into another wave of COVID-19 cases. Please do not make the same mistakes, so we all can be safe,” he said.

He also asked all regional leaders to be more proactive in monitoring every parameter in the pandemic handling procedures, so they are able to quickly respond to the situation and anticipate increasing cases. The given parameters are the number of active cases, positivity rate and the bed occupancy ratio (BOR).

Besides that, he added, regional administrations had also been demanded to strengthen their vaccination scope, Testing, Tracing and Treatment (3T) procedures and encourage the usage of the PeduliLindungi application in many places like shopping malls, cafes, markets and tourism spots.

“All parties must play their role in maintaining health protocols as part of the anticipation of new COVID-19 risks,” he said.
