egional administrations have been asked to accelerate COVID-19 vaccinations in their respective regions. Every vaccine dose must be made available and optimally used to boost the country’s vaccination scope and the people’s protection, a minister has said.
“There will be no need to postpone anything on the vaccination drive. All related stakeholders, including regional administrations, have been asked to make use of every dose of the available vaccines in respective regions to reach herd immunity,” Communications and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate on Tuesday.
Recently, 4,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines were found expired in Kudus regency, Central Java. Commenting on this, Johnny said this must not happen again in any region. Therefore, he asked other regions to move faster in distributing vaccines to the people residing in remote places to avoid vaccine wasting.
“We must learn not to spoil the vaccines. Please make sure that this will not happen again,” Johnny said.
He pointed out that many countries were currently searching for vaccines to reach herd immunity, and Indonesia had faced many difficulties in its efforts to bring home COVID-19 vaccines. Therefore, all related stakeholders have been asked to deliberate on how to effectively use their vaccine stocks.
According to the Health Ministry’s latest data, 125.4 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine, or 60.24 percent of the targeted population. As many as 79.3 million people have received both their shots. As for the elderly, as many as 9 million people have received the first shot and 5.6 million have received their second shot. As for teenagers aged 12 to 17, some 13.1 million have gotten their first jab and 8.1 million their second.
“We are targeting to inoculate 70 percent of the population by the end of this year,” Johnny said.
He added that the government would need all the support and cooperation it could get to reach the target, especially for vulnerable groups like the elderly.
He also urged the public to be very cautious when traveling, especially ahead of the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“If you must travel, then please adhere to the strict health protocols; wear your masks correctly. Do not provide any causes that could trigger an increase in cases during times of massive mobility. So, please be extra cautious,” he said.
