Danone-AQUA takes one step closer to carbon neutrality

C

oordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Pandjaitan inaugurated a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) in the Danone-AQUA Mambal factory in Badung, Bali, on Wednesday.

“Climate change is a challenge that is becoming increasingly serious and its effects are being felt today. As a company that upholds the One Planet One Health Vision, Danone believes that the health of the earth and human health are interrelated. Overcoming the impact of climate change is part of the company's efforts to create a more prosperous earth and society,” said Connie Ang, CEO of Danone Indonesia.

The PLTS was built in collaboration with Berkeley Energy Commercial Industry (BECIS) and is the biggest in Bali, with a capacity of 704 KWP. It can generate 1050 MWH of electricity per year and cut 882 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The launch also reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to focus on renewable energy utilization as Group of 20 president, as well as the company’s dedication to reducing its carbon footprint as a way to mitigate climate change. Danone has a goal of using 100 percent renewable energy by 2030, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

“One of the priority issues in Indonesia's G20 presidency in 2022 is how to achieve carbon neutrality and maximize the use of renewable energy to tackle climate change. The government continues to develop the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy use,” said Luhut. “We appreciate the steps taken by industry players such as Danone-AQUA with the inauguration of the rooftop PLTS today. This shows the company's great commitment as a stakeholder, because it has supported the government's focus on using renewable energy and innovating in its efforts to run a sustainable business."

“The use of rooftop PV in our factories, and one of them at the Mambal plant, is an important pillar of our business-sustainability strategy and we invite all stakeholders, including the industrial sector to participate and support the government's efforts in the transition to the use of renewable energy,” said Connie.

Danone-AQUA is one of the few companies to have switched to solar panels, installing its first in 2017. Prior to Wednesday, the installation of panels had been successfully implemented in Danone-AQUA factories in Ciherang, Banyuwangi, Klaten and Mekasari. This signals the company’s support for the government's program to accelerate the achievement of the target for the new and renewable energy mix in Indonesia of 23 percent by 2025.

“The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry continues to encourage various innovations in the development of new and renewable energy. Synergy between sectors is crucial to realize the acceleration of the energy transition, in line with the priorities of the government, especially within the framework of the G20 presidency,” said Director General of New and Renewable Energy at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry Dadan Kusdiana.

Dadan added that good coordination and collaboration was expected to be able to provide environmental and economic impacts for all stakeholders involved, from government agencies to private companies.

“On this occasion, we’ve all witnessed a concrete step taken by Danone-AQUA as an industry player, for its commitment to using clean energy, installing rooftop PLTS in all its factories in Indonesia,” he added.

In addition to the installation of more solar panels, Danone-AQUA also showed its commitment to mitigating climate change by applying packaging circularity in the plastic packaging waste-management initiative, which is currently being implemented through the #BijakBerplastik program, as well as the concept of water circularity, which is Danone-AQUA's contribution to protecting water resources and to conserve water, especially in communities in Indonesia that still lack access to clean water.
