The director of the UN Development Program’s (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Kanni Wignaraja, begins her official visit to Indonesia this week.
he director of the UN Development Program’s (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, Kanni Wignaraja, begins her official visit to Indonesia this week. Her visit will focus on strengthening synergies with the Indonesian government on climate change and a post-pandemic green recovery.
The key goal of her visit is bolstering the UNDP’s collaborations in clean energy transition and post-pandemic climate financing, as well as the protection of biodiversity. She will be meeting a range of stakeholders in the government, as well as civil society organizations and the private sector. Women leaders and project beneficiaries will also be invited to meet with the director.
The Sri Lankan national will meet with Health Minister Budi Guna Sadikin for the signing of one of the UNDP’s flagship programs on public health known as the Health Governance Initiative (HEART). The program aims to enhance and accelerate the digitalization of Indonesia’s health system.
Director Kanni’s seven-day visit will continue with a public dialogue on Indonesia’s transition to clean energy alongside leaders in the clean energy sector, chief sustainability officers (CSOs) and government officials. The discussion will include the government’s plans to remodel the forestry and land use sector in accordance with Indonesia’s 2030 decarbonization commitments.
She will also be visiting Labuan Bajo, where the UNDP is planning to start a biodiversity protection initiative in the Komodo National Park with the local government. Afterwards, she will be observing a health center supported by a digital vaccine logistical system co-created by the UNDP and Health Ministry.
There will also be a tsunami drill in Tanjung Benoa, Bali, where the UNDP forged a partnership with the local tourism sector and tours on disaster risk reduction.
Kanni Wignaraja was appointed assistant secretary-general and director of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific at the UNDP in November 2019. She has 25 years of experience in sustainable development programs, with deep knowledge of the global, regional and country-level workings of the UNDP across policy, programs, management and operations.
