he Wonderful Indonesia brand is making itself known at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. This year, Indonesia is one of the travel destinations promoted from Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, between matches. Using billboards and advertisements on single and double decker buses, the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry showcased Pesona Bali and the five Super Priority Tourism Destinations: Toba Lake, Borobudur, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo and Likupang.
The ministry banked on the influx of soccer fans coming from around the world to watch their favorite teams compete in Qatar. Through the branding on public transportation and digital billboards, the ministry hopes to introduce Indonesia as a travel destination to soccer fans.
“The World Cup is the right opportunity with its crowds, making it effective for promotion. We are specifically [targeting] the supporters as our main focus,” said Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno.
Indonesia is also preparing to become the host of 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where the tourism ministry can launch promotional activities during the side- and pre-events, as well as showcase products by the creative economy industry.
The minister expressed hope that the FIFA U-20 World Cup would trigger the revival of the tourism and creative economy sectors, which would further encourage the opening of businesses and job opportunities.
“We aim to create 1.1 million new job opportunities this year and 4.4 million new jobs until 2024," he added.
Minister Sandiaga further cited the success of sport tourism during the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Within one month of the opening ceremony, the number of tourists entering Russia was equal to the number of visitors within a year.
Aside from the number of visits, the tourists’ total spending reached 600 million euros (US$632 million) or around 1050 euros per tourist. The impact lasted for the following five years, with the Russian government calculating that the annual gross domestic product (GDP) increased by around 4 to 6 percent, at $3,000 per year.
Meanwhile, the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the first World Cup in the Arab world, was expected to attract 1.5 million visitors with 1,300 flights into the country every day throughout the remainder of the event.
