T

he topics of sustainability and decarbonization have increasingly become a central theme in discussions related to climate change and global warming. Because of this, the government has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2060 and has initiated collaborative efforts with state-owned enterprises and the private sector to realize this goal.

However, as the world gradually recovers from the pandemic and grapples with the challenges posed by an ongoing economic crisis, there is concern that the pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) may take a backseat in Indonesia's future discussions. It is important to note that failing to meet these SDGs could potentially discourage foreign investment in the country, further impeding economic recovery.

Additionally, according to the 2021 Climate Transparency Report, the primary driver of Indonesia's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is fuel combustion, stemming from sources such as electricity (35 percent), industry (27 percent) and transportation (27 percent). Agriculture accounts for 14 percent of the country's total emissions, excluding land use, while the food and beverage industry stands as the largest contributor to waste in Indonesia. In light of this and in honor of World Ozone Day, Nestlé aims to refocus the dialogue as the world confronts the pressing issue of “global boiling” by collaborating with the National Development and Planning Ministry (Bappenas) to host an educational webinar through The Jakarta Post’s webinar series, Jakpost Upclose.

Titled Beyond buzzword: the road to a sustainable value chain in Indonesia this webinar aims to discuss the following overall topics; the obstacles to managing a profitable business without long-term sustainable development; sustainability in all levels of business practices or levels of production; and how Indonesia can continue to become more environmentally friendly in the future.

For this discussion, the webinar will feature insights from the president director of Nestlé Indonesia, Samer Chedid; expert staff for social affairs and poverty alleviation at BAPPENAS, Dr. Vivi Yulaswati; and faculty member of Prasetiya Mulya Business School, Elliot Simangunsong Ph.D. The panel of speakers provides a vast range of experience and each of them will tackle the following specific topics; Vivi will discuss how Indonesia is embracing sustainable manufacturing and how the government can boost this development, Samer will elaborate on how Nestlé Indonesia has implemented decarbonization throughout its supply chains and manufacturing operations, and Elliot will explain what obstacles industry faces today regarding sustainability and how it can overcome them.

The webinar will take place on Sept. 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and is free for all participants. To register for the webinar, enter the following link bit.ly/JP-UpClose44.
