Biggest project in Pertamina's history: RDMP Balikpapan progress reaches 82%

T

he Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) in Balikpapan is the largest project in Pertamina's history. Currently, its progress stands at 82 percent.

RDMP Balikpapan includes a total of 5,203 pieces of equipment that have a total weight of 110,000 tonnes. The project’s heaviest equipment is the Residual Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) First Regenerator, which weighs 1,099 tonnes, with its tallest piece of equipment being the propane/proylene unit, which is around 110 meters high.

RDMP Balikpapan will raise Pertamina's refinery-processing capacity by 100,000 barrels per day, which will also reduce fuel imports.

Deputy State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Minister Kartika Wirjoatmodjo stated that RDMP Balikpapan is a National Strategic Project aimed at achieving national energy resilience and self-sufficiency.

"We are pushing for this National Strategic Project to meet its target. I am quite happy and proud that, despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, this project has reached 82 percent of its target," Kartika said during his work visit to the Pertamina Balikpapan Refinery Office in East Kalimantan on Sep. 27.

Pertamina CEO and president director Nicke Widyawati said that the RDMP Balikpapan project faces the highest level of difficulty because the existing refinery must continue to operate simultaneously with the project.

"We must ensure that the project continues to operate with high safety and reliability," Nicke said while accompanying Kartika.

Nicke explained that the project is divided into two parts. The first is to increase capacity, and then moving to the second step to improve quality and increase the production of petrochemicals and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

"With this additional capacity, it will automatically reduce Indonesia's daily oil imports by 100,000 barrels, which will significantly impact Indonesia's current account deficit," Nicke added.

Nicke also noted that the quality of the products produced by RDMP Balikpapan will be improved from Euro2 emission standard stage to Euro5, which will make them more environmentally friendly and in line with the standards set by the Environment and Forestry Ministry.

As a leading company in the energy transition, Pertamina is committed to supporting the realization of Indonesia’s net-zero emissions by 2060 target through continuously promoting programs that directly impact the country’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All those efforts also align with the implementation of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles throughout Pertamina's business and operations.
