Support for the success of the 2024 elections is once again pouring in for the General Elections Commission (KPU). The KPU signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a talk show and the Interfaith Harmony Warung Committee of Indonesia Bangkit at Istiqlal Mosque on Friday.
The signing was done by KPU chairman Hasyim Asy'ari along with the talk show and Interfaith Harmony Warung Committee of Indonesia Bangkit head Prof. Nasaruddin Umar.
Hasyim expressed his gratitude for the established cooperation. According to him, there has already been informal cooperation between the KPU and religious leaders apart from this signing. "This is just a formality. But this MoU is important for all of us," said Hasyim.
Hasyim also revealed that during the early period of his tenure at the KPU, efforts were made to build relationships with religious organizations in the country. This was done by visiting the offices of religious organizations. "We have established relations with the leaders of religious organizations such as the PBNU, Muhammadiyah, PGI, KWI, MATAKIN and even Walubi. But through this forum, we are now included in this interfaith forum for Indonesia Bangkit," Hasyim added.
Hasyim is grateful for the commitment of religious leaders to support the success of the elections, considering Indonesia's diversity in terms of ethnicity, religion, belief and culture. "On this occasion, we should once again be thankful and express our gratitude for the understanding among us. The KPU, provincial KPU and district/city KPU [will also follow up], so our scope of work is extensive," Hasyim said.
Meanwhile, Nasaruddin, who is also the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, gave an assurance that through the forum he leads, he will support the KPU in achieving success in the 2024 elections. "We back up the KPU to the best of our abilities because our goals and visions are the same: to create peace among the people," he said.
Specifically, he also agreed that places of worship should not be used for political activities. "So, the most effective way for us to keep places of worship free from practical political activities is to gather the leaders. This is where the platform is," he added.
