tate-owned securities paper and bill printing company Peruri has begun engaging with retailers to sell its electronic duty stamps or “e-meterai”, setting the ball rolling for the widespread adoption of the new digital service.

Peruri wrote in a press release on Saturday that the move followed up on the Finance Ministry's launch of the e-meterai on Oct. 1, one year after lawmakers passed an amended Stamp Duty Law, which gives exclusive rights to Peruri to issue the electronic stamp. Each duty stamp costs Rp 10,000 (69 US cents), but retail distributors can sell them at higher prices.

The government has introduced e-meterai to accommodate the rising use of digital documents and contracts in the past few years.

“Electronic duty stamps are one of the government’s steps toward optimizing tax administration, increasing state revenue [...] in a more transparent, paperless manner and in accordance with technological developments and international customs,” said the company.

Since January, the government has imposed a single stamp duty tariff of Rp 10,000 for all legal and transactional documents. The country will phase out the Rp 3,000 and Rp 6,000 physical stamps by the end of this year.
