The newly officiated Makassar New Port is the largest in the country’s eastern part and was built to support economic growth in the region.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated the first phase of the Makassar New Port on Thursday, the biggest shipping hub in the eastern Indonesia region and the country’s second-largest.
The port is part of the national strategic projects (PSNs) and aims to support economic growth in eastern Indonesia.
“Makassar New Port is the second biggest after Tanjung Priok [in Jakarta],” Jokowi said in his address, as quoted by cnbcindonesia.com.
“Its [the port’s] draft is 16 meters, making it a deep port which is good for large vessels carrying containers.”
Jokowi said the new port had a capacity of 2.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), more than triple that of the old Soekarno-Hatta Port, which only has a capacity of 750,000 TEUs per year.
The President also said the new port would contribute to reducing Indonesian logistics costs, which in recent years have fallen from 24 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) 10 years ago to 14 percent.
“Now our logistics costs have dropped to 14 percent. It has reduced a lot but remains a bit higher than in other countries,” he said.
