The Agriculture Ministry expects Indonesia will be self-sufficient in rice in 2027 and capable of exporting the commodity in 2028.
resident-elect Prabowo Subianto pledged on Wednesday that Indonesia would be capable of food self-sufficiency by the end of his upcoming administration, which the country has long found difficult to achieve.
Achieving food and energy self-sufficiency is “a must” for Southeast Asia's largest economy, Prabowo said, adding that he was confident it could be met within four years of his leadership.
“We have no choice but to be self-sufficient in food. I am confident that we will be able [to achieve it] no later than four years from [the day] I receive my mandate [as president],” he said during the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2024 on Wednesday.
Prabowo is due to be inaugurated as the country’s eighth president on Oct. 20.
