T

he Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Indonesia believes United States President Donald Trump may ultimately impose a uniform tariff rate on Indonesia and other countries in the region.

CSIS researcher Riandy Laksono said in a press briefing on Thursday that, albeit still an assumption, Trump was likely to set an equal import duty for goods shipped in from “small countries like [Indonesia], Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand.”

He surmised that the level would probably be set at Vietnam’s current rate of 20 percent.

“The suspicion is narrowing down that way, even though no one knows,” said Riandy, hinting at Trump’s erratic tariff policies that have been subject to frequent changes in the past few months.

In letters sent out to numerous heads of government earlier this week, Trump told US trade partners that higher tariffs would become effective on Aug. 1, pushing back the deadline from the initial plan to enforce the so-called “reciprocal” tariffs starting on July 9.

That initial deadline had been announced in April, when the White House decided not to enforce the tariffs immediately but to give the affected countries three months to negotiate better terms in bilateral trade deals with Washington.
