tate-owned arms manufacturer PT Pindad has begun to produce more Maung Garuda military vehicles, which are envisioned as new top-level government official vehicles following President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions to make use of locally made cars.
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said on Saturday that production has begun for ministerial officials, while noting that regional heads and other public officials would follow in subsequent phases.
“Yes, we started producing [the vehicle]. The important thing is everyone’s commitment to use the Maung,” Prasetyo said, as quoted by state news agency Antara. “Prabowo has set an example by riding in the Maung Garuda, so officials should follow suit.”
“Our first priority is ministers, then vice ministers; after that, as more units come, we’ll extend it to governors and mayors,” Prasetyo continued.
Maung Garuda is a nickname for the MV3 Garuda Limousine SUV version of Pindad’s Maung tactical series.
The 4x4 vehicle garnered significant attention during Prabowo’s inauguration as president on Oct. 20, as he greeted spectators along Jakarta’s roads in a distinctively military-looking car with a long body and a sunroof.
