ustainable viscose-rayon fiber producer Asia Pacific Rayon (APR) strengthened its commitment to support sustainable fashion in a collaborative collection with Indonesian designers, showcased during Jakarta Fashion Week 2024.

Held on Oct. 26, the presentation titled "Revival of Simplicity" showcased a total of 48 looks by four labels; Aruna Creative, Bateeq, Frederika and Ghea Resort by Amanda Janna.

APR Head of Marketing Communication Zoey Rasjid said the collaboration was APR's second participation in the annual Jakarta Fashion Week since the company started operating in 2019, adding that APR was fully committed to promoting a sustainable textile and fashion industry in Indonesia.

"This year, we are carrying a theme of simplicity that combines elements of sustainability in viscose-rayon as part of our commitment to invite all stakeholders to jointly support sustainable fashion in Indonesia," said Zoey.

Acknowledging the fashion industry’s waste problem, Zoey highlighted APR’s APR2030 sustainability commitment that seeks to reduce their products’ carbon footprint, improve manufacturing effectiveness, promote circularity and create positive impact on local communities.

“We’re hoping that by working with local and international designers, we can promote sustainable fashion more widely.”

The four brands in the presentation, with 12 looks each, were challenged to interpret the central theme of simplicity through their designs, while also utilizing APR viscose-rayon fabric, which comes from renewable and biodegradable materials that support the implementation of sustainable fashion in Indonesia.

Each brand displays 12 collections made from viscose-rayon that are comfortable, simple and ready-to-wear. Through this collaboration, all brands are also exploring the use of viscose-rayon which can produce clothing in various styles, ranging from combining modern batik, unique and trendy everyday clothes, to styles that reflect simplicity with a contemporary touch.

In this collaboration, Aruna Creative presented the "Wastra on Denim" collection, which demonstrated that rayon fiber can be incorporated into denim. At the same time, the collection featured traditional batik motifs, particularly the Truntum motif as a symbol of eternal and sincere love.

Meanwhile, Bateeq introduced the “Pawon” collection with two themes, Gana and Tampa, which interpret Indonesian culture through various contemporary patterns. This collection combines tradition with a modern twist, encouraging the use of batik for a variety of occasions using sustainable viscose-rayon fiber fabrics.

Continuing the success of the Sweet Plantation collection in early 2023, FREDERIKA continued its collaboration with APR for “METAMORFOSA”, an exclusive lyocell collection that highlights the fabric’s softness as well as dynamic everyday silhouettes designed according to Indonesia's tropical climate.

Ghea Resort by Amanda Janna explored the concept of simplicity, spirituality and traditional philosophy of the Balinese people, known as "Tri Hita Kirana". For its collection at JFW 2024, the label combined viscose-rayon fabrics with patterns inspired by the Balinese Poleng textile and Gerinsing patterns to display the richness of Bali Aga culture in a presentation combining the traditional and the contemporary.

In addition, APR also supported the 2024 Fashion Designers Competition (LPM), which is part of JFW’s commitment to support young Indonesian designers and is expected to be able to introduce viscose-rayon fiber to promote sustainability among Indonesia’s emerging designers.

Alongside honoring the winners, LPM also introduced the APR Award for designers who are able to design clothing using viscose-rayon while prioritizing the concept of “Authenticity”.

"Viscose-rayon gives a soft, flowing and cool touch to the collection that I show, and this really meets my expectations for creating my work," said 23-year-old Nurfathiyah, who received the APR Award for a white vintage-style dress made from viscose rayon under her Thiya label.

APR’s Zoey Rasjid also served as one of the judges in LPM 2023, alongside designers Sebastian Gunawan and Hian Tjen, Istituto Marangoni representative for Indonesia Lisa Malonda and Dewi fashion editor Aldi Indrajaya.
