Tiered tabulation: Upholding KPU's credibility, upholding Indonesian democracy

P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has urged everyone to exercise restraint and patience in responding to the quick count results of the 2024 general election. The President also called on the public to wait and trust the official tallying results conducted by the General Elections Commission (KPU).

"The quick count results are a scientific method. But regardless, we must wait for the official results from the KPU. So, be patient. Don't rush. Patience," said President Jokowi during a press briefing at the Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO), Jakarta, on Thursday. On Wednesday, Indonesian citizens went to the polls to elect the next president and vice president, members of the House of Representatives, members of the People's Regional Representative Councils (DPRD) at the provincial, district/city levels, and members of the Regional Representative Councils (DPD).

Next, the KPU will conduct a tiered tabulation of the results, which will continue until March 20. The tabulation process includes vote counting from the polling stations (TPS), uploading the recapitulation results of each TPS to the Sirekap application. All of this is carried out in stages, calculated from the level of the District Election Committee (PPK) to the national level by the central KPU.

Referring to Regulation No. 3/2022, the determination of the election results will be made promptly (three days after the decision is read) if there are no disputes regarding the election results. The General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) is committed to overseeing the tiered tabulation process of the 2024 elections currently being conducted by the KPU and underway at the district level. A member of Bawaslu, Lolly Suhenty, stated that this duty and responsibility are carried out in all stages of the elections, including the tabulation stage, and it is mandated by the law.

"Of course, we are preparing various best strategies. In addition to conducting continuous supervision, we also collect and document according to the best efforts, so that if there are disputes regarding the results, we have accurate data," she said.

The 2024 elections had a national voter list (DPT) totaling 204.8 million voters. Some 18 national political parties ran in the elections, namely (according to serial number) the National Awakening Party (PKB), Gerindra Party, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Golkar Party, NasDem Party, Labor Party, the Indonesian Momentum Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), Nusantara Awakening Party (PKN), Hanura Party, Garuda Party, National Mandate Party (PAN), Crescent Star Party (PBB), Democratic Party, Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Great Indonesia Movement Party (Perindo), United Development Party (PPP), and Ummat Party.

In addition, six local political parties ran in Aceh, namely the Aceh Homeland Party, Generation Party of Aceh Beusaboh Tha'at and Taqwa, Aceh Darul Party, Aceh Party, Aceh Just and Prosperous Party, and Aceh Independent People's Solidarity Party.

The three presidential tickets were Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar; Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka; and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.

All entities involved in the 2024 Elections process have been and continue to carry out their duties and responsibilities. Various obstacles and problems are undoubtedly part of the process. However, the KPU and other relevant institutions have also prepared mechanisms for reporting indications of errors that occur.

"Therefore, officially, let us wait for the tiered tabulation process currently being carried out by the KPU," said KPU member Idham Holik.

By waiting for the official tabulation results, Idham hopes that all parties can respect the KPU's work. "All parties must comply with the Elections Law, which instructs the KPU to carry out tiered tabulation after the vote count at the polling stations," he said.

The public certainly hopes that the hard work of all parties can open the door to solutions for the issues in the 2024 simultaneous elections. There is only one goal, to hold increasingly democratic, healthy and dignified elections. Let's strengthen our unity and make the elections a means of integration #PeacefulElection2024. Never tire of loving Indonesia!
