T

he fine arts can often seem exclusive, accessible only to the highbrow elite, but three women artists Ayu Arista Murti, Endang Lestari and Theresia Agustina Sitompul have shown otherwise in Tiga Sisi: Jelajah dan Media (Three sides: Exploration and media).

The exhibition, which ran from June 19 to July 4 at the National Gallery of Indonesia, delved into everyday themes like family, home and work, making art relatable and accessible to all.

“When we look at their works, it seems as if these artists are just having fun with clay, paint and a variety of other materials,” exhibition curator Asikin Hasan told during a press conference on June 13 at the gallery and museum in Central Jakarta.

“But when we look carefully, we see that they have seriously explored many different facets of their art. [...] And these explorations are crucial,” Asikin added. “Through [their] explorations, they can develop their artistic skills and enhance their techniques.”

The three artists are all graduates of Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta, albeit different classes. Ayu is a painting major from the class of 1997, Endang is a ceramics major from the class of 1995, and Theresia graduated from the printmaking program in 1999.

Throughout their careers, they have explored many new and unconventional media beyond their university majors, and this was showcased in the exhibit’s three main sections in the main hall of the gallery’s Building A, each featuring the works of one artist.
