rt Jakarta is back this year with a more innovative, fresh and open concept as Art Jakarta Gardens. The exhibit is held at Hutan Kota by Plataran, Central Jakarta, for eight days, starting from April 7.  According to Plataran founder and CEO Yozua Makes, the new concept was brought on by the new normal after the pandemic. This is also the first Art Jakarta to be held since 2020.

“Outdoor exhibitions can better accommodate sculptures or other three-dimensional works of art. So far, generally, indoor exhibitions focus more on paintings or dual-dimensional works,” explained the artistic director of Art Jakarta, Enin Supriyanto.

It was opened by Tourism and Creative Economy Deputy Minister Angela Tanoesoedibjo. She revealed that the event had a target of bringing 8,000 visitors in the span of a week and is expectant that it would be successful. She added that hopefully, the art fair will increase public appreciation of art, as well as attract contemporary enthusiasts from all over the world to Jakarta.

“This year, with a better situation, I am very happy that Art Jakarta Gardens can be implemented using a semi-outdoor concept, which is definitely better in terms of air circulation,” Angela said.

The event adorned the Hutan Kota area with sculptures and art installations on every corner. The artworks displayed were of renowned Indonesian artists such as I Nyoman Nuarta represented by Linda Gallery, Doloras Sinaga of Façade x Kiniko Art, Nus Salomo of SAL Project and Sunaryo represented by Bale Project. Some international artists are also taking part in the exhibition, with Ashley Bickerton and Dusadee Huntraku.

The exhibition area provides two special tents to accommodate 20 art galleries. Local galleries in attendance are ROH, Jakarta; Artsociates, Bandung in West Java; Kohesi Initiatives, Yogyakarta. Gajah Gallery from Singapore and A+ Works of Art from Kuala Lumpur are also present for the event.

“Art Jakarta Gardens is the realization of a commitment to reviving the spirit of collaboration, which has been the main driver of the fine arts ecosystem in Indonesia. Hopefully, this event can be a sign of the reopening of social spaces that were once closed and the reestablishment of gatherings in public spaces that have been stalled — through art appreciation and the joy of enjoying art,” said Maulana Indraguna Sutowo, CEO of MRA Group.

Furthermore, this year’s event also brings about special artwork to be displayed. The exhibition introduces new artwork such as Museum of Toys, which are masterpieces by Roby Dwi Antono that have not been seen ever before. Afdahl, an artist and Yogyakarta native also made some pieces especially for the occasion this year.

Accompanying the rise of discourse about digital art and technology blockchain, Art Jakarta Gardens collaborated with Solana to display some non-fungible tokens (NFT) as well. Curated by Evan Tan, fellow NFT owner and collector, the exhibit is hoped to give an introduction and education to those who are beginning to explore the NFT market.

With education and appreciation as the core missions of Art Jakarta, a tour around the gardens with guides will be provided to visitors in order to provide information and stories behind each artwork. Bartega Studio is also present to give fine arts workshops to those who are interested. In the evening, days will be completed by nobar (watch together) of documentaries about Indonesian artists.
