KADIN Indonesia kicks off European tour to promote B20 Forum

A

delegation from the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN Indonesia) has started a tour of Europe from May 22 to June 4.

Led by KADIN chair Arsjad Rasjid and B20 Indonesia chair Shinta W. Kamdani, the series of visits is part of B20 Indonesia, the official dialogue forum for the Group of 20 (G20) global business community within the framework of Indonesia's G20 presidency.

The roadshow for the B20 Indonesia delegation began at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, where Arsjad conveyed the objectives of Indonesia’s G20 presidency and the role of Indonesian businesses in the global economy.

Arsjad emphasized the important objectives of the Indonesian delegation, which is promoting B20 Indonesia and invites European investors to attend the upcoming B20 Summit in Bali later in November.

KADIN is also working to promote more bilateral trade and investment cooperation, explore new economic partnerships with European businesses, and identify key partners for the Indonesian Trading House.

“We use the opportunity of this annual WEF 2022 meeting to promote Indonesia’s G20 presidency and B20, along with outlining the Indonesian government’s three priority areas for the G20 in 2022: Global Health Architecture, Digital Transformation and Energy Transition, as well as discussing pressing economic issues due to geopolitical uncertainty that is occurring following the prolonged impact of the pandemic," Arsjad said in a written statement.

In the WEF forum, B20 Indonesia hosted the “B20 Indonesia Business and Investment Forum” at the Indonesian Pavilion, which invited global CEOs to attend and be involved in the B20 Bali Summit. The panel discussion in the forum was opened by the CEO of Bakrie & Brothers, chairman of the KADIN Advisory Board and member of B20 International Advocacy Caucus Anindya Novyan Bakrie.

The Fireside Chat at the "B20 Indonesia Business and Investment Forum" was held with three priority agendas, the first being green energy transition and investment opportunities. The session invited ACWA Power CEO Paddy Padmanathan, who also serves as the co-chair of the B20 Energy, Sustainability and Climate Task Force.

The second topic raised was equitable health care, inviting Gavi Alliance managing director Marie-Ange Saraka-Yao to share her insights on mitigating healthcare issues in G20 countries and the importance of collaboration between the government and the private sector.

Meanwhile, the last topic of digitalization and inclusion invited Tokopedia CEO William Tanuwijaya as speaker.

Overall, the discussion forum highlighted the obstacles to the transition to green energy use, and ensuring a fair and affordable transition and investment potential in the sector. Melissa Stark from Accenture was also present to explain the energy transition investment projects in Indonesia.

To develop stronger business ties, bilateral meetings were also held with strategic partners from Swiss companies and business associations, including Economiesuisse, Swiss Innovation Agency Innosuisse, Roche Group and the Swiss-Asia Chamber of Commerce.

According to Shinta, the delegation’s tour will continue to the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, countries that are known to be very developed economically and the most promising partners among other European Union countries.

Currently, Indonesia's annual economic trade with the EU is valued at around US$25.5 billion, with $2.69 billion of European investment in Indonesia in the services, manufacturing and finance sectors.

KADIN Indonesia also held an honorary meeting with the Directorate General of Trade of the European Commission and Business Europe in Brussels. In addition, the Indonesia-EU Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is currently being drafted to optimize the potential for trade and economic partnerships between the two parties.

“Although trade continues to increase, there are still many opportunities for cooperation between European and Indonesian companies that can be explored to benefit both parties' economies. This is the era of business diversification and creating a more resilient supply chain. KADIN Indonesia is ready to bridge EU members to explore investment opportunities in Indonesia," Shinta said.

Shinta added that Indonesia and Europe had collaborated in overcoming many global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, green energy and democratic development so that Indonesia’s G20 and B20 presidencies can serve as an opportunity to encourage more collaboration that can benefit the post-pandemic world recovery.

For the Indonesian delegation, the visit is an important foundation for B20 Indonesia in expanding the participation of global business leaders to drive the future transformation of the world economy. Arsjad and Shinta agreed that strong ties with the EU will support B20 Indonesia in providing an international network, especially in terms of knowledge sharing to create a legacy program for the global economic recovery.
