B20 chief Shinta Kamdani’s plan to achieve recovery through collaboration

T

he chief organizer of Business 20 (B20) Indonesia, Shinta Kamdani, expressed how memorable it was to participate in the 2022 World Economic Forum (WEF 2022) in Davos, Switzerland. She emphasized the importance of the meetings, attended by world leaders and business corporations, to discuss the world’s most pressing economic issues.

“WEF 2022 is very important and relevant because the world's geopolitical and geoeconomic situation is quite tense and must be resolved. Starting from joint efforts to rise from COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine crisis and accelerating the energy transition to economic inclusion through digital innovation and a sustainable health system were discussed," Shinta said in a written statement.

One of the focuses of the meeting was the Russia-Ukraine crisis, which has widely affected the stability of the food, energy and financial sectors. World business leaders also discussed the aspect of human rights regarding the impact of the war between the two countries.

As the head of B20 Indonesia and deputy chairperson for maritime affairs, investment and foreign affairs at the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Shinta said she was glad to know that the topics of the meeting were aligned with the priority topics of the Group of 20, such as global health architecture, energy transition and digitalization.

"Important issues discussed related to the energy transition, for example, demonstrated the commitment to forming various initiatives, such as the First Movers Coalition of 50 companies that will reduce carbon emissions of heavy industry and the long-distance transportation sector, which is responsible for 30 percent of global emissions; and the CEO of the Climate Leaders Alliance, which agreed to take decisive action for emission reductions,” said Shinta.

Moreover, B20 Indonesia has formed the Energy, Sustainability and Climate Task Force to recommend solutions to encourage G20 countries to take concrete steps to transition to a greener world at various levels.

On the side of digital innovation, global leaders also highlight the importance of incorporating new technology to help government and corporations to tackle climate change, which will benefit economic recovery and anticipate the impact of the pandemic in the health sector, a lesson learned from COVID-19.

“Through the sophistication of digital technology, big data, artificial intelligence and quantum analytics, we can identify and accelerate decarbonization efforts. This is very important and relevant to the steps taken by B20 Indonesia through the Digitalization Task Force and the Energy, Sustainability and Climate Task Force in encouraging stimulating policies to call for low-carbon economic activity," Shinta added.

One thing that must not be overlooked is the importance of overcoming health problems that are the origin of the emergence of the global economic crisis. In order to build back, the world needs to pay attention to the gap in health infrastructure, especially access to vaccines. It needs to improve to anticipate future health crises.

“At WEF 2022, it was agreed to launch the Accord for a Healthier World, supported by Pfizer, to provide medicines and vaccines on a non-profit basis to 45 low-income countries and the MoU Platform for Health and Health Care with Saudi Arabia for a value-based global health movement and people-centered," she said.

During WEF 2022, Indonesia will host the business and investment forum in the Indonesian Pavilion. CEOs who wish to attend the B20 Indonesia Summit are expected to attend. This opportunity is aimed at promoting Indonesia's investment opportunities, as well as covering various sectors such as eco-tourism, renewable energy and the construction of a new capital city.

Shinta herself will speak on the Strategic Outlook on ASEAN, which will discuss the progress and achievements of ASEAN countries in their efforts to recover from the pandemic and their place in the increasingly intense geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions of the world.

Along with Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi and economic ministers from various countries, Shinta was invited to share her thoughts on the economic partnership between the Asia Pacific and Latin America. Both areas are strategically placed in supply chain governance.

"In each forum session, I share how public-private collaboration in Indonesia continues to strengthen and how we can work together in utilizing systemic change and innovation to open up possible approaches to support the three priority issues that we are promoting. And together, we can find steps to have the best quality improvement in health, politics and the economy that is fair, inclusive and sustainable," she said.

B20 Indonesia will be a platform for world business leaders to collaborate on economic recovery and better health infrastructure to create a world order that is stronger, fairer and more inclusive. Shinta sees WEF 2022 as an opportunity to invite businesses to attend the B20 Indonesia Summit in Bali in November.
