World AI & RPA Show highlights role of AI in Indonesian development

T

he 34th global edition of the World AI & RPA Show, organized by Trescon and supported by Kolaborasi Riset dan Inovasi Industri Kecerdasan Artifisial (KORIKA) and the Indonesia AI Society (IAIS), connects the most influential voices in Indonesia's artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation (RPA) space.

Held at the JW Marriott Hotel in Jakarta from Wednesday to Thursday, the show was one of the biggest gatherings of elite global AI and RPA leaders and enthusiasts, with both government agencies and the private sector coming together to explore the National AI Strategy Framework.

Trescon CEO Mithun Shetty said in a statement that the key to successfully harnessing the power of AI and RPA was to foster an innovative culture.

“AI is enabling Indonesia to become a prominent player in both regional and global markets, and this conference provides a great opportunity for AI and RPA thought leaders and enterprises to exchange ideas, build partnerships and collaborate toward a shared vision,” he said.

The event focuses on AI and RPA as the next hot spot in Jakarta's innovation ecosystem and adoption of AI in companies to make businesses more productive. In particular, the National AI Strategy Framework aims to tie together many of the country's digital initiatives and maps closely to Vision Indonesia 2045.

“AI will empower Indonesia’s vision as one of the largest economies in the world by 2045. The Digital Transformation and Innovation ecosystem are the main drivers to achieve this goal,” says Hammam Riza, Principal Expert, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) President of KORIKA.

The two-day event provided a mix of informative keynotes, technological use cases, panel discussions and product showcases, with a wide range of expert panelists including Hammam Riza; Hary Budiarto, Chairman of Research and Talent Development Agency, Communications and Information Ministry; Bambang Dwi Anggono, Director of e-Government, Department of Communications and Informatics; Setiaji, Chief of Digital Transformation Office, Health Ministry; and Lukas, Co-founder and Chairperson of Indonesia AI Society.

From the private sector, panelists included Suganthi Shivkumar, Vice President for Asia of Alteryx; Kevin Lim, Regional Vice President, SEATH Dataiku; Katrina Briedis, Senior Product Marketing Manager, APAC, Denodo; and Jean-marc Provost, Director of Digital and Conversational AI, Genesys.

Speaking to The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of the first day, Laiye Principal Consultant for Southeast Asia Tauhid Abddul Jalil said AI could play a critical role in a country’s development, noting that the COVID-19 pandemic had made it clear that automated solutions in devices and software were becoming more intuitive to meet our needs.

“In Southeast Asia specifically, the need for technology is very much rising tremendously. We also see governments and influential organizations heavily investing in AI; not so much as to reduce costs, but to scale. That’s the only way for companies today to scale, as physical resources are finite,” he explained.

Tauhid, who was also a panelist on a discussion on AI in customer experience, said that events such as the World AI & RPA Show were “exceptionally important” as they allowed companies like Laiye to touch base with potential users in the Indonesian market, as well as providing feedback on the outlook of AI and RPA.

“As a company like Laiye, which is in essence quite young in the international market, to expand, instead of pushing just ourselves out there, we are coming to listen and understand the market so that we are able to provide something that is immediately delivering value to the Indonesian organizations and businesses.”
