ome Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian opened the Association of Regency Administrations Expo (AOE) at the Cendrawasih Room of the Jakarta Convention Center, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday. During the opening ceremony, the minister expressed his appreciation for the association’s consistent efforts to navigate the pandemic.
“This expo plays an important role in promoting various commodities from each region, specifically in the trade, tourism and investment sectors. We’re also seeing products from our homegrown micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMES),” said Tito.
The MSME sector, according to Tito, has been able to support Indonesia through dwindling economic conditions. Among the many regions with stagnant or even waning economies, four provinces were able to weather the conditions: Yogyakarta, Papua, North Maluku and Central Sulawesi. With the exception of Yogyakarta, all the provinces were supported by heavy investments.
Yogyakarta’s success is a blueprint for other regions to nurture a sustainable MSME-supported economy. First, there needs to be an effort to encourage MSMEs in the form of government regulations. Secondly, MSMEs thrive under affirmative actions and support from the banking sector, including financing. Third, the government must help provide a marketplace platform where potential buyers can discover MSME products.
Unlike the previous year in which only 75 regencies occupied 115 booths, the AOE 2022 saw an increase of participants due to the decline in COVID-19 cases. “This year, we have 123 regency administrations, five private companies and two state-owned enterprises at 247 booths. They are ready to collaborate with buyers and potential investors,” said general chairperson of the Association of Regency Administrations (APKASI), Sutan Riska Tuanku Kerajaan, who added that the participants have prepared themselves with product samples and various investment proposals.
From July 20-22, the AOE 2022 will have product exhibitions and other side events including an executive dialogue with the theme of “Green Investment and Regional Governments’ Role, Goals and Challenges” for the G20 High Summit. There will also be a coaching clinic for attracting buyers and investors through global networks, a talk show on women empowerment through MSMEs, promotion of wastra (traditional fabric), traditional-art performances and business-matching sessions between buyers or investors and regional administrations.
