Indonesia is ready to host the 2022 International Olympiad in Informatics

T

he International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) is the most-prestigious international competition in the field of informatics for middle- and high-school students. In 2022, Indonesia has the honor of hosting the 34th IOI. The international event will be held in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) on Aug. 7-Aug.15.

Secretary-general of the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry, Suharti described Indonesia's readiness as the host. "The IOI 2022 team has coordinated with related institutions such as the Foreign Affairs Ministry to assist in the preparation for the arrival of participants from abroad, predicted to amount to 360 participants from 89 teams, 72 of whom will arrive directly to Indonesia," said Suharti in a media briefing, at the Office of the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (20/7).

Suharti added that the success of the 34th IOI event would be proven by the collaboration between the central, regional, private and media governments. "The IOI 2022 organizing-committee team also received a good reception and extraordinary support from the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, through various related regional-work units. Thank you for the support," said secretary-general Suharti.

On the same occasion, a resource person who is on the IOI 2022 Host Organizing Committee and an alumni of the Indonesian Computer Olympiad team, Brian Marshal, said that after two consecutive years of being held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, IOI 2022 in Indonesia would be the first competition to be held in hybrid (both online and offline).

"The alumni and coaches of the Indonesian Computer Olympiad team via the TOKI Alumni Association are happy and proud to be able to contribute to and collaborate with the Education and Culture Ministry in organizing IOI 2022," Brian said, while explaining that Indonesia has participated in this competition since 1995 and had won several championships and collected many medals in this competition.

Meanwhile, information-technology practitioner Ainun Najib said that there are significant trends and opportunities in the field of informatics and stressed the importance of learning the basic principles of how to use computer speed to help solve problems since childhood.

"In the last few decades, many technological innovations have emerged. Computing, calculation and automation capabilities, the speed of which are growing exponentially, have helped humans by taking over the workloads that were once manually performed by the human mind and hand,” said Ainun.

On the same occasion, the 2009 IOI silver-medal winner and information-technology practitioner, Veni Johanna, said that students and technology practitioners in Indonesia are very capable of competing in the international-informatics world.

"This is evidenced by the Indonesian Computer Olympiad Team that regularly wins medals at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and even won gold in the last three IOIs. Success in competitions like this is a good provision for the professional world as well," he said.

"Many high-school Science Olympiad alumni later become founders or leaders of technology companies in Indonesia or work in world-technology companies such as those in Silicon Valley," added Veni.

In this year's competition, Indonesia sent eight participants, who were divided into two teams. Team A consisted of Albert Yulius Friendlyalim from Ricci I Catholic high school, West Jakarta; Juan Carlo Vieri from Intan Permata Hati high school, Surabaya, East Java; Maximilliano Utomo from Xin Zhong high school, Surabaya; and Joseph Oliver Lim from Jakarta 1 Penabur high school, West Jakarta. Meanwhile, Team B consisted of Albert Ariel Putra from Petra 4 Christian high school, Sidoarjo, East Java; Matthew Allan from Kanisius high school, Central Jakarta; Andrew from Sutomo 1 senior high school, Medan, North Sumatra; and Vannes Wijaya from SMAN 8 Pekanbaru, Riau.

The implementation of IOI 2022 is supported by several entities, including the Law and Human Rights Ministry, the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry, the provincial government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the Special Capital Region of Jakarta and state-owned companies including Taman Temple Tour (TWC) PT. Angkasa Pura 1, PT. Angkasa Pura 2, PT. Telkom, PT. PLN and several partners from international and national private companies, namely Acer, Jane Street, Tezos, Huawei, SIRCLO and Blibli.
