The government is committed to encouraging local Papuan Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (UMKM/UMi) to grow and develop.
It was emphasized by the Minister of Communications and Informatics, Johnny G. Plate in his speech which was delivered virtually through an anoline meeting platform, before audience at the peak event of the Bangga Buatan Indonesia National Movement, Proud of Indonesian-made products (Gernas BBI), which took the theme "Binar Digital Papua" at Cenderawasih Sports Center of Jayapura regency in Papua, Wednesday (24/8/2022).
In Johnny’s view, the land of Papua which is located at the easternmost part of Indonesia, is home to a variety of natural beauty and fascinating cultural richness. That being said, Papua has enormous potential, that can be harnessed into superior products in the fields of fashion, culinary, and crafts.
"In the midst of the momentum of national economic growth which reached 5.44 percent (year on year/yoy) in the second quarter of this year, it is necessary to continue to encourage the growth of MSMEs/UMi," said Minister of Communications and Informatics.
This has become the background for the appointment of Jayapura City as the host for the convention of the peak event for Gernas BBI, raising the theme "Binar Digital Papua". The event will also encourage local MSME/UMi actors to remain adaptive in the current pandemic era.
"In May 2020, President Joko Widodo inaugurated Gernas BBI as a form of Government’s support for domestic products, especially MSME/UMi products, to be able to compete during the COVID-19 pandemic," said Johnny.
Therefore, Minister of Communications and Informatics emphasized that Gernas BBI has a mission to encourage brand strengthening and the use of digital technology for local artisanal products, as well as encourage consumers to buy domestic MSME/UMi products.
The peak event of Gernas BBI "Digital Binar Papua" was enlivened by MSME product expo, Papuan cultural dance performances, performance of Papuan artists, fashion shows, the inauguration of Binar Digital Papua and other events.
