B20 Working Group gears up for the upcoming Summit

T

he Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) has been appointed by the government to be the organizer of Business 20 (B20), as Indonesia is set to host the two-day B20 Summit in Bali, starting on Nov. 13. It is reported that the business working group of G20 represents 6.5 million people in the international business community, accounting for 80 percent of the world's GDP.

After initially meeting with representatives from other member countries when Indonesia first took the presidency in January, the B20 group is ready to present their policy recommendation ahead of the summit in Bali.

“During this year, Indonesia has held a series of task force-level meetings with business leaders and ministers related to the business economy of the G20 countries. During the meeting, we have produced many policy recommendations, which we have condensed into Legacy Programs and [which] will be proposed at the [Group of 20] G20 Summit," said Tony Wenas as a representative of the Chairs Organizing Committee of B20 Indonesia. He is also the president director of PT Freeport Indonesia and has been serving as deputy chairperson of KADIN Indonesia.

The B20 Summit is expected to be attended by several heads of state and/or government, including Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and of course, President Joko Widodo of Indonesia.

Under the B20 presidency, seven task forces have been assigned to spotlight important sectors of business: trade and investment, future of work and education, finance and infrastructure, energy, climate and sustainability, integrity and compliance, and women in business action council. The sects’ responsibilities include formulating policy recommendations for the future that center around sustainability and balanced economic growth.

In terms of preparation, Tony highlighted the contributions of essential partners in Ngurah Rai International Airport, as well as other airports in Banyuwangi and Lombok. He also praised the readiness of various hotels in Bali, which will provide more than 10,000 rooms that have been conditioned to accommodate guests. Tony assured that the event also needs the support and participation of MSMEs, as the backbone of Indonesia’s economy.

The B20 is intended for the benefit of all sectors of economy, a goal that is in line with the B20 theme, Advancing Innovative, Inclusive and Collaborative Growth. The group will champion a few causes for the business climates in the future, such as innovation in traditional businesses, inclusivity and equality in the business community, so that economic growth will benefit the general public.

Tony believes that as G20 host, the B20 summit will play a hand in attracting large investments to Indonesia, as long as the country can offer a number of important factors for investors, such as legal certainty, being climate-investment friendly and a fast bureaucracy.

"That is our target in implementing the B20 -- the hope that we can invite more investment into Indonesia. So that [the investment realization target of] Rp 1.2 quadrillion (US$76.36 billion) can be achieved, whether foreign investment, domestic investment or regional investment, " said Tony.
