‘B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards’ book highlights small steps to building a better world

T

he Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN Indonesia) has launched the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book following an open call that resulted in more than 700 applicants and 200 proposals from 34 cities in Indonesia across three main categories; access to clean water; reduction and reuse of plastic waste; and women taking the lead in sustainability.

The book launch coincided with the 2022 B20 Indonesia Net Zero Summit, which took place at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Nov. 11. Attending the summit was the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Gen. (ret) Luhut Pandjaitan, who became the first person to receive the book.

According to Luhut, the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book can help create strategic and impactful steps as part of the commitment by the business world to support better and more sustainable development in Indonesia.

“In order to build a sustainable and environmentally friendly Indonesia, it is necessary to  change the way in which the Indonesian economy moves by adopting sustainable  practices. This book will be a guide for Indonesian companies to transition into  sustainable businesses. In addition, this book is a place to appreciate all stakeholders, including registrants who have submitted their sustainability efforts for a better and healthier Indonesia," he said.

.

Luhut also expressed his appreciation for the steps taken by KADIN Indonesia as it will provide recognition and appreciation for every innovation made by businesses and individuals in improving inclusive sustainability practices in their activities, while also highlighting Indonesia’s reputation as a country that has a high commitment to prioritizing sustainable development practices.

KADIN Indonesia chair and host of B20 Indonesia Arsjad Rasjid, said that sustainable practices had many benefits for companies, such as improving the company's image and reputation in the eyes of investors, while simultaneously helping them continue to innovate and have a positive impact on the environment.

“The B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book helps make SMEs [small and medium enterprises] and private sector actors aware of the importance of adopting sustainable practices. Moreover, climate change concerns are spurring governments, businesses and consumers to reduce carbon footprints and become more sustainable. Not only to preserve the environment, adopting sustainable practices also opens up great opportunities for the company to receive investment," he said, adding that the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book was evidence that companies in Indonesia are serious in implementing sustainable business practices.

B20 Indonesia chair and coordinating vice chairman for maritime affairs,  investment and international relations Shinta W. Kamdani said that with the  world experiencing an ecological crisis where many disasters occur as a result of climate change, there is a need for concrete steps from business actors to adopt sustainable practices.

“The B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards is the beginning of the Indonesian business actors’ transition into sustainability. Basically, efforts to transition to a sustainable business require synergistic collaboration among business actors, the government and other stakeholders. Business actors must also position themselves as the solution and not part of the problem.

“The organization and launch of the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book also proves that sustainable business practices can not only be carried out by large companies, but that MSMEs [micro, small and medium enterprises] can also take part," explained Shinta.

Chair of the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards and president director of PT  Anugerah Pharmindo Lestari Christophe Piganiol also expressed his appreciation of the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book launch as it could inspire and increase collaboration among stakeholders together to start adopting sustainable practices.

He added that the book documented the track record and hard work of businesses and individuals who instill sustainable practices by embracing communities to participate in their agendas.

“The launch of the B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards book will connect stakeholders in collaborating together so that they can make a sustainable world. Through this book, it is hoped that it can inspire other companies and increase collaboration among stakeholders to adopt sustainable practices. With the achievements and impacts that more than 200 companies and SMEs have made, it shows that this world has a better generation for the future,” said Christophe.

The book launch was also attended by Agus Ciputra, chairman of the European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (EuroCham) and president director of PT BASF; president director of HSBC, François de Maricourt; president director and CEO Siemens Indonesia, Lamine Jendoubi; head of strategy, business development and government affairs Siemens Indonesia, Bernard Ade Permatista; and partner and president commissioner PT. AT Kearney,  Alessandro Gazzini.

The B20 Sustainability 4.0 Awards were initiated by SwissCham in collaboration with  KADIN Indonesia and EuroCham. The activity is the first collaboration between Europe  and Indonesia and a sideline event of B20 Indonesia, which provides appreciation for business people and MSMEs who instill sustainable practices in their business processes and strategies by integrating environmental and community aspects.

The B20 Sustainability Awards were also supported by BritCham, EKONID, IBAI, IFCCI,  Trisakti University, Coventry University and sponsors including PT Anugerah Pharmindo  Lestari, Veolia, Kearney, Siemens, Indesso, HSBC and Zurich.
