Badjatex: Taking bold steps toward sustainable living

T

he management of natural resources and the process of disposing of pollutants and toxic waste are important for achieving the goals of economic growth and sustainable development. A large amount of waste without being accompanied by appropriate processing can have severe impacts, both on human health and the environment.

Referring to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, one of the main targets is to reduce waste production through prevention, reduction, recycling and reusing. Therefore, it is necessary to have initiatives from industry, business and consumers to work together in an effort to reduce waste and encourage the recycling process. At the same time, this effort is geared toward an energy-efficient culture that leads to economic growth and sustainable development.

Badjatex is a textile manufacturer located in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Established in 1975, Badjatex is focused on providing high-quality denim and dyed fabrics and marketing its products to domestic and international markets efficiently and responsibly. Badjatex made a breakthrough by changing the way waste is handled around the factory environment.

Why is Badjatex so concerned about the environment? Based on the United Nations Environment Program, in 2050, the world population will amount to 10 billion; and with a swelling population, there will also be more demands or needs around food, fashion, housing and other necessities. Meanwhile, environmental damage and the climate crisis are happening continuously, and our lifestyle is one of the factors that harms this planet. As such, we need to take action to fight it by living sustainably.

For a better future, Badjatex takes a bold step to make the fashion business sustainable. Here is the story about the efforts that Badjatex has made to achieve its goals.

We know that water is a very important resource and is needed for our daily activities. However, there is very little fresh water available to us. In response, Badjatex implemented waste-water treatment to process waste that has been generated from the production process to save 425 million liters of water obtained from re-engineering the production process and using new technology such as Ozone technology. By re-engineering the production process, using Ozone technology and environmentally friendly raw materials and recycling, Badjatex also reduces energy use, reduces use of chemicals that can damage the environment, minimizes carbon emissions and saves water.

By restarting the production process, Badjatex has managed to save a total of 4.17 million liters and a total of 3,949,237 KWh in energy use. Additionally, Badjatex also managed to reduce carbon emissions by 2.2 million tonnes of CO2e.

Badjatex has also been using organic-cotton fiber since 2006 and recycled-cotton fiber since 2009, as well as collaborating with sustainable-chemical and dye suppliers to develop fabrics with low-impact chemicals. Badjatex also works with partners who supply BCI-certified cotton, recycled cotton, recycled polyester fiber, Tencel fiber and Refibra, an innovation that combines wood and recycled-cotton fiber.

Badjatex has an installed capacity of 2.5 million yards of denim and 1.3 million yards of dyes per month. The Badjatex factory has the unique ability to manufacture multiple product lines under one roof while implementing best-in-class practices in every business process, starting from procuring yarn, weaving and dyeing to finishing. This enables Badjatex to adequately meet the increasing world demand and ensures that each product adheres to the highest-quality standards. Badjatex has also developed a method to change the waste treatment around the factory with the aim of empowering the community and preserving the environment by reducing and reusing products that can be recycled to create a clean and healthy environment. We partner with local-waste banks to educate employees and the local community on how to minimize and recycle waste to generate cash for economic gain.

On the same occasion the main director of Badjatex Hendra Jusuf also advised everyone, especially young people, to join the sustainability movement by taking small bold steps: reducing the use of plastic, starting to use tumblers and wearing sustainable denim. We also collaborated with brands like PMP and Aye Denim, with more to come, to raise awareness about our sustainability cause and to inspire more people to join the cause.

“Despite being a quintessential part of our modern era, the fashion industry plays a significant role in global warming and pollution. Thus, it is critical that individuals are aware of this issue and begin shifting to a more-sustainable lifestyle. The fight for a greener Earth is a fight for everyone. Badjatex is trailblazing the path to sustainability in Indonesia’s textile industry. Some brave steps we have taken include integrating recycled materials into our products, reengineering our production processes to reduce carbon emissions, recycling water and initiating a company-wide Garbage Bank program. I also believe that the future is created by previous, current and next generations; hence, it is essential that we all work together for a livable tomorrow,” said Hendra Jusuf, director of PT Badjatex.

Let us take bold steps together toward a better future!
