Sustainable entrepreneurship as the standard of the future

S

ustainable entrepreneurship is the solution for businesses to gain profit in parallel with their responsibility to maintain environmental and social sustainability. With this new method, businesses have the goal not only to create viable market solutions but also to act as agents of change in terms of sustainable development.

The new method has also been implemented in businesses across various sectors in Indonesia. Based on the Social Business Platform (PLUS) report in 2018, the number of social entrepreneurship actors in Indonesia is estimated at 342,000 entities.

The shift in leadership has also been proven to be beneficial to businesses from a financial point of view. Angel Investor Network Indonesia (ANGIN) reported that the amount of capital in Impact Investments grew by 400 percent between 2013 and 2020. This illustrates the tremendous potential for sustainable entrepreneurship development in Indonesia in order to solve social, economic and environmental problems.

The younger generation is aspiring to the “work for impact” job experiences, taking into account the 5Ps; people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnerships. The ideology is expected to only become the norm in the future, as the education sector has also played a part in shaping the desire of the 5P. An example is what is taught at the PPM School of Management.

PPM management through the PPM School of Management held a sharing session discussion in order to increase the awareness of the business world about the importance of applying the principles of sustainability in running a business. The program is in line with the university’s philosophy of jalan daun, which is the vision of being able to grow together with partners in order to have a positive impact on society and the country.

“Today’s seminar is aimed at increasing awareness about sustainability, especially to achieve the SDGs, which has been done for a long time and should be a concern, especially for us as higher education,” said Anggun Persona Intan, social entrepreneurship core faculty lecturer at the PPM School of Management.

She attended the sharing session to explain sustainable entrepreneurship in the context of achieving the SDGs. The special event is a part of a two-week agenda with Dr. Teresa Chaline of Yale University's Fulbright Specialist Senior Lecture in Social Entrepreneurship (e-Minef).

“We serve to mint change agents when they come out [of our program] and also [have them] care about sustainability issues. It will also be published, as providing policy advice, not only to the government but also to business actors,” she added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Teresa explained how sustainability issues affected investment decisions. She concluded that as business and society became more integrated, it was no longer possible to take one approach over the other, between profit and social responsibility.

The event was also attended by Bryan Tilaar, the president of Martina Berto Group, as well as a member of the PPM Foundation Board, who shared how sustainability values could be aligned in business, where the business remains profitable but also remains impactful.

Giving the Kampoeng Djamu Organik program as an example, along with women’s empowerment, Dani Wildan, senior VP head of social entrepreneurship and incubation at BRI, elaborated on how through the program, BRI aimed to empower the village economy through village development both online and offline.
