he film industry is one of the creative industries, and it is experiencing massive growth and becoming stronger through increasing interest among film enthusiasts and key industry figures.

This is evident in the growing number of Indonesian films screened at a many renowned film festivals around the world. It is an important achievement that is inspiring film communities and young filmmakers from across the archipelago to produce their own work and enter them in film festivals, both national and international.

The Film, Music and Media Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology has embraced this enthusiasm among local film communities and filmmakers by launching its annual Short Film Production Competition in 2021.

Every year since, the competition has received over 300 entries. Of these, 10 entries are selected as the best films and win prizes that include funding for future productions and mentoring from national and even international filmmakers.

Now in its third year, the 2023 edition of the Short Film Production Competition is themed “Layar Indonesiana” (Indonesian screen).

In an attempt to top last year’s event, the 2023 Short Film Production Competition is also hosting series of mentoring and production programs featuring both Indonesian and foreign filmmakers. Some notables include a short course from the New York Film Academy (NYFA) and a workshop helmed by programmer Park Sungho of Busan International Film Festival.

In addition, the films produced as part of the NYFA Short Course will premiere at the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) 2023 in November-December.

The 2023 Short Film Production Competition will kick off with a Media Gathering and Screening, which has been scheduled to coincide with National Film Day on March 30. This will be followed by the Film Roadshow that will tour three provincial capitals: Palu in Central Sulawesi, Samarinda in East Kalimantan and Jambi in Jambi province.

Ahmad Mahendra, the education ministry’s Film, Music and Media Director, expressed his excitement about this year’s competition.

“Layar Indonesiana is a platform that can incubate new talents in the Indonesian film industry who will be the backbone of regeneration of national filmmakers. This is also a form of the government’s tangible support for Indonesian films that are recognized on the global stage,” said Ahmad.

Layar Indonesiana curator Ifa Isfansyah added: “The competition’s focus is not just on Jakarta. The same opportunity is open to all filmmakers from any region in Indonesia. We hope that Layar Indonesiana will be a pathway for talented filmmakers to emerge and their launchpad to creating great films in the future.”

The selection panel is composed of industry professionals that include director Ifa Isfansyah, screenwriter Rahabi Mandra, producer and Jakarta Film Week director Rina Damayanti and producer Yulia Evina Bara.

Registration for Layar Indonesia opens on March 6, 2023 and closes on May 1, 2023, accessed through the competition’s official webpage: ringkas.kemdikbud.go.id/LayarIndonesiana2023.

Aspiring filmmakers can also submit their film proposals for a chance at winning one of 25 spots on the NYFA Short Course. The top 10 participants of the Short Course will be given additional facilities and guidance to produce their films, including a film production workshop during which they will be mentored by professional filmmakers.
