n March 9, CTI Group, a leading provider of digital infrastructure solutions in Southeast Asia, held their offline 2023 IT Infrastructure Summit at the Tribrata Darmawangsa, South Jakarta. With the theme The Metaverse: Why Does Your Business Need to Be Prepared, Now?, this event was designed to help Indonesian businesses and organizations receive a comprehensive crash course on how they can start utilizing the metaverse to create ideas, strategies and solutions as the world supposedly starts nearing the metaverse era.

The event presented a number of keynote speakers, the main one being Nathanael Lim, cofounder of Avium, an experienced veteran in the tech industry who specializes in Web 3.0 technology. Other speakers include Dr. Anthon Hutabarat, Alibaba Cloud’s director of channel and Adi Rusli, Palo Alto Networks Indonesia’s country director. The keynote speakers discussed the essentials of the metaverse, explaining its practical uses for businesses and the possible issues that need to be considered when utilizing this new technology.

Additionally, a panel discussion was held after the keynote speakers, where industry experts shared their insight on some of the best practices on leveraging the metaverse for their businesses. The speakers for the panel discussion involved the aforementioned Nathanael Lim; Accenture Indonesia’s country managing director, Jayant Bhargava; and DMID WIR Group’s managing director, Anastasia Grace.

“Businesses must prepare themselves to adopt the metaverse technologies, even though they are not fully mature yet, and many of the supporting technologies are still unrefined; the metaverse market is filled with untapped potential; it is too big to ignore,” said CTI Group’s president director, Rachmat Gunawan.

Rachmat Gunawan further elaborated by saying the youths of Generation Z, who make up nearly 30 percent of the world population, will become the true citizens of the metaverse. Gen Z youths are considered a digital native generation, a generation that grew up and developed alongside digital technology, making them inherently technologically savvy.

“Utilizing the metaverse will give companies a huge opportunity to reach the Gen Z market, the customers of the future. Because of that, building a foundation in adopting the metaverse is a strategic step that companies need to consider to remain competitive in the increasingly digitized future,” added Rachmat.

According to a report by Accenture, as much as 55 percent of consumers want to become active users of the metaverse, and as much as 90 percent intend to do so by next year. Aside from that, nearly 89 percent of executives (C-level) also believe the metaverse will have an integral role in the development of a company in the future. It is also worth noting the main desired features of the usage of the metaverse from the consumer perspective are as follows: an intuitive interface and multi-app access, making up 70 and 68 percent of the requests respectively.

Eggy Tanuwijaya, Alibaba Cloud’s Director of Solution Architect, further elaborates with “We recognize how the consumers of Indonesia are developing digitally and how quick they are in embracing new technologies. We are confident that the Metaverse will be a game changer in the future, and we are ready to provide multi-dimensional interactions between customers and businesses. Through CTI’s IT Infrastructure Summit, we can widely disperse information as well as solutions from Alibaba Cloud that support the implementation of The Metaverse in businesses”

In deciding business strategies for the Metaverse, business owners need to consider the existing risks, like identifying or anticipating customer demands and their preferred channels, and tackling issues of privacy, security, and control. Another aspect worth considering is the ease of use and interoperability of the Metaverse, which will be supported by Web 3.0, and is now still in development, with work being done by internet innovators and investors, which hopefully will result in a decentralized platform.

“Security is the most important component  in protecting the identities,  privacy and data of our users in a decentralized digital environment. There are multiple points of entries that make the Metaverse vulnerable to attacks or threats, important private data can be collected through the Internet of Things (IoT) and Edge software, where it can be processed very quickly with the current 5G speeds. Which is why, through this event, we want to help industry leaders in creating a safe and secure strategy for their implementation of the Metaverse.” Said Adi Rusli, Country Director of Palo Alto Networks, to close the panel.

Running in parallel at the CTI IT Infrastructure Summit, the iCIO Community, an association of Chief Information Officers within Indonesian companies, held their annual iCIO Awards. A prestigious awards event meant to celebrate the achievements of Indonesian CIOs and CEOs, the event finally returns after a lengthy 2 year delay due to the pandemic..
