n this day and age we are no stranger to being greeted by our device’s screen light every time we wake up, or seeing pictures of our friends on holiday while scrolling through our social media feeds. Almost everyone today has done it, since the flow of information and trends in the media today seem to have become the core of our lives as humans.
Unfortunately, information in the media is often distorted and does not represent existing reality. Messages fed to us from the media are oftentimes superficial and anxiety-inducing rather than empowering. This has encouraged Pekan Komunikasi UI to invite everyone to look further and take an active role in overcoming this situation.
Pekan Komunikasi UI is an event consisting of a series of competitions in the field of communication between students held by the students of Communication Studies at the University of Indonesia. This annual event was first held in 2007 and this year it takes place from February to May 2023.
Pekan Komunikasi UI ideated “Image-Mediated Spectacles: Ciptakan Pesan Berdaya” (Creating Empowering Messages) as the theme of the year. The aforementioned theme stresses the importance of a communication strategy that is able to produce powerful media messages in order for them to be conveyed properly. In other words, Pekan Komunikasi UI 2023 wants to raise public awareness as an involved party in the process of distribution, consumption and reproduction of information to create empowerment through messages.
Pekan Komunikasi UI 2023 is not a competition seeking to be like any other. They are set to be a place for students throughout Indonesia to delve deeper into the broadness of knowledge relating to the field of communication. Practitioners and professionals will be involved in various series of Pekan Komunikasi UI 2023 events, and their presence is expected to help students discover about the implementation of a variety of knowledge and experiences in the world of communication work and professionals.
This year’s Pekan Komunikasi UI is held in a hybrid manner (online and offline) with activities centering around the hustles and bustles of Jakarta and Depok. Pekan Komunikasi UI 2023 consists of a series of events divided into pre-events, events and post-events.
Pekan Komunikasi UI 2023 provides public discussions and workshops, and will also include a nation-wide seminar and competitions between students in the branches of communication science, namely Advertising War for the field of advertising, Media Matters for the field of media studies, Journalight for journalism and PR Vaganza for public relations.
The competition for each specialization centralizes around a variety of different sub-themes: Advertising War’s “Giving Loud Voices for the Little Guys,” Media Matters’ “Elevating the Power of the Unrepresented,” Journalight’s “Humane Journalism,” and PR Vaganza’s “Embracing the Public Right to Break the Second-hand Reality.” Each respective sub-themes invites audiences to create and disseminate powerful messages through the media, which are seen and implemented more specifically through the eyes of each field.
