his year, after an extended offline hiatus, the annual University of Indonesia Communications Week (Pekan Komunikasi UI) event has returned with the theme “Image Mediated Spectacles: Create Empowering Messages” in hybrid form with full-fledged in-person events. The event, which started in February and continued on until the end of May, is made for and by communication studies students at University of Indonesia, but it is open to all students from various universities across the country.
Consisting of a series of activities ranging from competitions, discussions, workshops and even company visits, this event is meant to motivate and educate students regarding their specializations within the field of communications. The various activities are divided into four groups, namely advertising with the Advertising War activity, public relations with the PR Vaganza activity, journalism with the Journalight activity and media studies with the Media Matters activity.
The activities commenced with a series of public discussions held last February, and were followed by the opening of the Pekom competition. This competition is a national-level event that was attended by participants from a slew of universities across the various regions of Indonesia. Additionally, participants also received training from professional practitioners in related fields through a series of workshops, emphasizing the educational aspect of the event.
The highlight of the Pekom event, which took place on the 11th to 31st of May 2023, was when finalists were invited to take part in a series of activities on the final week. For three days, participants not only competed in the final round, but they also visited various companies in the relevant fields of communication and media, namely Prudential Syariah, Magnus Digital Indonesia, Tempo, and The Jakarta Post.
Furthermore, on the 12th of May 2023, at the UI Convention Center, participants and hundreds of students took part in the event’s National Seminar, which held the theme of “Expectation Against Reality: Social Media Frames in the 2024 Political Year”. The seminar was attended by a number of distinguished guest speakers, namely Dr. Richard Murray from the University of Queensland Australia, Margaretta Tiojakin (President and Chief Revenue Officer of The Jakarta Post), Noudhy Valdryno (Head of Public Policy at Meta Indonesia) and Abigail Limuria (Co-Founder of Bijak Memilih and What Is Up Indonesia).
