BPK calls for better approach to achieve 2030 SDG target

T

he Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) can only be achieved through collaboration across all levels of the government and public. Indonesia has set a target for 2030 and is calling on all stakeholders to work together for the common good.

The Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) has reiterated its commitment to supporting the acceleration of achieving the 2030 agenda targets for the SDGs. Previously, it was announced that the BPK was elected as chair of the Panel of External Auditors of the United Nations, the Specialized Agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency for the period of December 2022 to December 2023. The body was also nominated as chair by the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAI) Panel members.

Speaking at an event for the launch of the SDG Report 2023 Special Edition at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, BPK head Isma Yatun highlighted three important points to better ensure success in achieving the 2030 targets. The first was related to strengthening the oversight mechanism by assessing the readiness and implementation of SDGs to provide assurance on SDG achievement reports and recommendations for achievement based on the mandate of the auditing institution in each country.

“Secondly, it is very important to have an appropriate accountability framework and data for the SDGs. There is a need for a standardized, integrated and efficient SDG reporting system that maximizes the potential of digital transformation. The third point is to create an impact ecosystem to maintain value and benefits for the community," said Isma.

Together with other speakers, including the prime ministers of Canada and Barbados, as well as senior UN officials and the minister of the Netherlands, Isma explained how the BPK had made a real contribution by examining the government's approach to implementing the SDGs, as well as by encouraging the development of capacities to implement the goals in Indonesia.

Isma also expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian government for assisting on the transition and implementation of the SDGs across the archipelago, none of which could be achieved if done alone. Following up on the results of the BPK audit, the government has improved the SDG policy design and institutional mechanisms to align with the national development plan by issuing regulations on the implementation of SDGs at the national and regional levels to ensure that the development is parallel across the country.

"I want to reiterate the important role of SAI in supporting the accelerated achievement of the SDGs. This can be seen through its function of ensuring reliable reporting on SDG implementation, providing objective assessments, and identifying areas for improvement. Through independent audits, SAI acts as a catalyst for accountability and transparency, encouraging the effective and efficient use of resources to achieve SDG success," concluded Isma.
