ong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu led a delegation to Jakarta to strengthen ties under the Belt and Road Initiative. The delegation, organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), comprised 30 business leaders from major Hong Kong organizations and chambers. During the visit, multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) were signed in various sectors, including finance, trade, technology and cultural exchange.
Mr. Lee visited the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, a crucial Belt and Road Initiative project, and engaged with local enterprises to explore business opportunities. A business luncheon was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Government and HKTDC, in which Mr. Lee highlighted the role Hong Kong plays as an important conduit between Mainland China and the rest of the world.
The visit also featured a dinner hosted by the Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN, Ms. Hou Yanqi, who expressed gratitude for the continuous support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Jakarta and promoted Hong Kong's early accession to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
In addition to Indonesia, the delegation also visited Singapore, where seven MOUs were signed, further expanding collaboration between Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. The visit aimed to strengthen ties, expand networks and discuss collaboration opportunities related to new policies in Hong Kong, including the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), the Belt and Road Initiative and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
The delegation's efforts were well received, with Deputy Trade Minister Jerry Sambuaga expressing optimism about the growing symbiotic relationship between Indonesia and Hong Kong.
As the visit to Indonesia concludes, the delegation will continue its visit program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, meeting with local political and business leaders there. The HKTDC, with its longstanding commitment to promoting Hong Kong as an international business and financial hub, aims to foster mutual growth and prosperity through strengthened partnerships with Southeast Asian nations.
