Famed Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson said it best: “Wine is bottled poetry.”
Like-minded oenophiles will be ecstatic to learn that this year’s Jakarta Wine Festival opens at the end of the month at Ashta District 8 shopping mall in the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD), South Jakarta.
From Aug. 31 to Sept. 3, the festival will be presenting hundreds of wine varieties and vineyards from around the world, as well as a series of wine education workshops.
The event concept came from Pritha Casadevall and Poetri Andayani, inspired by the Jakarta Wine Club Series Community and the educational activities it held regularly for its 480 members.
The festival’s “Art of Celebration” theme was born to bring together connoisseurs of both wine and art, along with anyone else interested, in a spirit of inclusiveness.
To reach an even bigger crowd, the festival organizer has collaborated with individuals from various backgrounds known for celebrating life through wine, art and food.
The three-day festival balances education and celebration through 20 workshops on wine, art, food, mental health and sustainability, all designed to be accessible to both novices and experts.
Beginners can also join workshops that will introduce them to the world of wine, including varieties, glasses and menus. More advanced visitors can attend workshops on pairing wine with cheese, oysters and other foods.
Those with a more serious bent can sign up for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Level 1 certification program.
As a plus, festivalgoers can rest assured that they will be contributing to sustainability: In collaboration with recycling partner Octopus Indonesia, 100 percent of used wine bottles from the festival will be recycled.
Meanwhile, other festivalgoers can expand their knowledge beyond wine through cooking classes that spotlight spicy Indonesian dishes in a culinary showcase at the Spac8 studio, located on the upper ground floor.
Those drawn more to visual creativity can take the various art workshops on offer, such as watercolor painting and upcycling wine bottles into artistic pieces.
Celebrating and appreciating art takes center stage in a group exhibition of local artists that promote sustainability across various genres, from paintings and installations to ceramics and macramé.
Visitors can sample over 300 types of wine by purchasing a wine tasting token for Rp 349,000, which includes 5 wine tastings and one glass and comes complete with a private guided tour. Alternatively, gastronomes can purchase a food token for Rp 200,000 to partake of a cheese platter and other appetizing dishes from food vendors at Space8.
Early bird tokens can be had at special prices from Aug. 7 to 15.
All tokens are available for purchasing through Traveloka and the JKTGO app. For more information about the Jakarta Wine Festival, visit the festival’s official Instagram account @jakartawinefest.
