President Jokowi, coordinating minister arrive at New Delhi G20 Summit

arrying the theme of "Recover Together, Recover Stronger," Indonesia successfully hosted the Group of 20 presidency last year. Through this theme, Indonesia emphasized the following three priority agendas; Global Health Architecture, Sustainable Energy Transition and Digital Economy Transformation.

One of the noteworthy achievements during Indonesia's G20 presidency in 2022 was the agreement on the "G20 Bali Leaders' Declaration," which affirmed strategic commitments, including the Pandemic Fund, Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST), and a commitment to addressing the climate crisis. Additionally, various investment commitments were made, such as the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) and Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), resulting in several concrete deliverables.

"After the conclusion of Indonesia's G20 presidency in 2022, the current G20 chairmanship will be held by India. Therefore, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, along with the Indonesian delegation, will attend the G20 High-Level Conference [HLC] in New Delhi, which is scheduled for Sept. 9-10, 2023, at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre. Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto will accompany the President in the G20 HLC and various bilateral meetings," said Haryo Limanseto, spokesperson for the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, on Sept. 8 at the ministry's office.

The G20 HLC in New Delhi was the 18th G20 Summit since its first gathering in 2008 in Washington, DC. This summit marked the sixth face-to-face G20 meeting held in Asia, following the ones in Seoul (2010), Antalya (2015), Hangzhou (2016), Osaka (2019) and Bali (2022).This was because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Saudi Arabia’s G20 Presidency in 2020 was organized virtually.

"India, as the G20 president, has chosen the theme 'One Earth, One Family, One Future.' Indonesia, as the G20 president in 2022, holds a position as a member of the Troika, along with Brazil as the G20 president in 2024," said Haryo.

India outlined six priorities during its presidency: Green Development; Climate Finance & Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE); Accelerated, Inclusive & Resilient Growth; Accelerating Progress on SDGs; Technological Transformation & Digital Public Infrastructure; Multilateral Institutions for the 21st century; and Women-led Development. In the Sherpa Track, there were several new initiatives in India's presidency, namely the Culture Working Group; Disaster Risk Resilience and Reduction Working Group; Research and Innovation Initiative Gathering; and Start-Up 20.

In addition to the G20 member countries, the G20 HLC in New Delhi was also attended by nine invited countries: Bangladesh, the Netherlands, Egypt, Mauritius, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as international organizations. President Jokowi's presence at the G20 HLC in New Delhi followed the successful hosting of the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta just recently, which took place from Sept. 5-7.

Accompanying Minister Airlangga at the G20 HLC in New Delhi were officials such as the secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, the deputy for international economic cooperation and coordination, who serves as the Co-Sherpa for G20 Indonesia, and the assistant deputy for multilateral economic cooperation.
