old miner PT J Resources Bolaang Mongondow (JRBM), a subsidiary of mining holding company PT J Resources Asia Pacific, was recognized at the Subroto Award 2023 as the Most Innovative Metal Mineral Commodity Company in the Community Development and Empowerment (PPM) category on Sept. 29.
JRBM operates in the regencies of Bolaang Mongondow, East Bolaang Mongondow and South Bolaang Mongondow in North Sulawesi. The company started out by helping cocoa farmers to develop in 2019, under a program that quickly grew from 22 to 120 farmers by the end of 2022.
The program has also attracted the interest of around 100 independent farmers in surrounding areas.
The company provides seeds, fertilizers and agricultural tools. It also provides assistance through training and motivational workshops as well as daily supervision from field agricultural extension officers (PPL).
In order to ensure that cocoa farmers use sustainable practices, JRBM promotes the use of organic fertilizers, namely coconut coir, cocoa shells, banana stems, water hyacinth and other natural materials that are easily obtainable but not in regular use.
"Sustainability, which is an important global issue, is also a concern for us. Steps toward agroforestry have begun to be carried out in the cocoa program to ensure that social and environmental aspects are maintained,” said JRBM president director Anang Rizkani Noor, who is also chief sustainability officer at PT J Resources Nusantara (JRN).
In addition to winning the community development and empowerment award, JRBM also won the prestigious Main Award for Mining and Environmental Management and the Primary Award for Mining Safety.
The company previously won the Good Mining Practice Award from the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry in 2020.
Its achievements in recent years complement JRBM’s commitment to maintaining natural resources through good and sustainable practices.
The energy ministry held this year’s Subroto Award to mark the 78th Mining and Energy Day.
The award is named after professor Subroto, who served as the energy minister from 1978 to 1988. It is the country’s highest award in the energy and mineral resources sector and is given to recognize those who have made significant contributions to the sector in the past year.
