Program Warung Sikumbang by PNM generates economic value for traders

T Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) has demonstrated excellent results in its commitment to social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) through the Warung Sikumbang program. Collaborating with the Seasoldier Foundation, PNM has conducted education and waste measurement to create economic value for the trader community in the Taman Kuningan Mulia area, located near the PNM headquarters.

The program has been running for one year, with the first period from July 7 - Nov. 4, 2022, and the second period from Feb. 13 - Aug 11, 2023. An evaluation was conducted in December 2022 – January 2023 before extending the Warung Sikumbang program.

In addition to instilling an understanding of the importance of environmental conservation, traders and warung (food stall) operators were also educated about the economic value of waste through a waste bank. PNM's president director, Arief Mulyadi, also hopes that businesses' consistency in managing their waste will continue.

"The more traders are willing to start managing waste, their economic income increases, in addition to contributing to reducing carbon emissions. This positive aspect should be shared with other traders and warung operators," said Arief.

PNM provides supporting materials, including organic and inorganic waste bins, waste bank record books, demonstration holes for organic waste processing using biopore methods, and rewards for warung owners who actively separate and weigh waste. Out of the total 50 warung operating in Taman Kuningan Mulia, 21 owners have actively participated in waste separation and weighing.

In the first period, the amount of separated waste was 289.3 kilograms, which drastically increased in the second period to a total of 1,662.5 kg. The waste consisted of paper, plastic, metal and other materials. The economic value for those actively separating and weighing waste has also increased.

"Before the Warung Sikumbang program, 94 percent of warung owners did not separate waste. Now we can see a shift in the behavior of traders when they understand the economic value of improving their livelihoods. This means that the TJSL program needs to be packaged to consider not only environmental but also social and economic aspects," said Arief.

"If we remain consistent in waste separation habits, we can jointly address three fundamental societal problems: economic, social and environmental issues," he added.

As a company focused on empowering customers through financing and support, PNM has, at the very least, assisted the government in achieving 11 out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which encompass economic, social and environmental aspects. Over the past year, the Warung Sikumbang program has covered all three of these aspects, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 398 kgCO2e.

PNM continues to provide sustainable financing and support, aiming to uplift micro and ultra-micro businesses. It is this ongoing financing and support that sets PNM apart from other financing institutions.
