PNM targets coral reefs conservation as part of its responsibility

P

T Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) Banyuwangi is carrying out coral reef conservation action as part of the company's social and environmental responsibility (TJSL) program by planting new coral reefs at Bangsring Underwater Beach in Banyuwangi, East Java.

The activity was inaugurated by the Banyuwangi regional government at the Banyuwangi Bangsring Underwater Amphitheater, on Thursday (9/11).

According to the Marine Spatial Management Directorate General of the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, 33.82 percent of coral reefs all over the archipelago have experienced damage or are in poor condition.

Not only do they provide an important ecosystem for life underwater and protect coastal areas by reducing the power of waves hitting the coast, Indonesia’s coral reefs are some of the most diverse in the world. The calls for conservation and protection is now higher than ever.

"PNM's presence in society does not stop with our stakeholders, but also the community and the surrounding environment," said Mira Damayanti as Head of PNM's TJSL Division.

The revitalization effort by PNM covered the Bangsring Underwater Tourist Beach, a favorite among tourists and visitors, partly because of the diversity of coral reefs that are present. It is hoped that the activity done here will later have a multiplier effect on the surrounding areas.

Furthermore, the coral reefs conservation is in line with numbers 13 and 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) compiled by the United Nations, which are handling climate change and marine ecosystems, respectively. This also shows PNM’s commitment to walking the path of sustainability with three main pillars; economic, social and environmental sustainability.

"We will continue to monitor so that this effort does not stop at just planting, but until there is growth so that the revitalization of coral reefs is truly real," concluded Mira.
