Identifying movers and shakers on the Island of the Gods

T

he Nuanu Social Fund (NSF) has launched an innovative mapping research initiative, entitled "Changemakers in and around Bali" to celebrate leaders in communities that are inspiring the future of Indonesia. The innovators are chosen based on a comprehensive six-month study by the NSF.

The launch event was accompanied by a visually captivating map that highlights key areas of social innovation, a detailed magazine with reports and narratives and an interactive website offering ongoing research updates and networking opportunities.

“My vision for the NSF is rooted in the belief that communities have the power to shape their own destiny and create a brighter future. And seeing the NSF team move forward to achieve this vision and reach this milestone fills me with pride. I eagerly anticipate their continued support for impactful projects," said Sergey Solonin, founder of Nuanu.

It is hoped that the initiative can provide an understanding of the social and environmental landscape around the island through identifying and mapping individuals and organizations that display distinct qualities and patterns within the clusters.

By finding and fostering connections around it, the NSF hopes to comprehend the challenges and needs they face, as well as determining their various roles within the larger system. Additionally, the website serves as a potent networking and research tool, steering the network toward community impact and highlighting collaboration opportunities.

“The journey of Nuanu Social Fund began with the curiosity to discover and connect individuals and organizations dedicated, like us, to Bali's wellbeing and tackling global challenges. As architects of this journey, we have crafted a unique process to map the 'Changemakers in and around Bali', setting the stage for transformative initiatives and collaborations,” added Denis Guseynov, director of the NSF.

The mapping methodology employed snowball sampling, a technique in which research participants are asked to assist researchers in identifying other potential subjects. By actively involving the communities in the research, it is hoped that the technique can be a vessel to foster collaboration and transformative change.

Furthermore, aligned with the NSF's broader mission, which extends beyond the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), preserving Bali's rich culture and tradition remains a key focus.

"I personally believe that Bali is one of the only places that has not lost its spiritual heritage. Seeing the Nuanu Social Fund prioritize ‘Preserving Culture and Tradition’ as one of its key missions brings me immense joy,” said Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana, chairman of Bali Tourism Board as she extended her support.

In its dedication to catalyzing impactful projects and supporting individuals and communities in line with its mission in the form of essential funds, expert knowledge and a strong network, the NSF actively contributes to the growth and transformation of entities that align with Nuanu's vision for a promising future.

“I deeply appreciate the NSA's ambitious goals and feel strongly with its mission to empower communities. I am fortunate to have received its support to activate a passion project of mine, Timbal Hub. Through this project I am able to provide a safe and proper space for the youth of Tabanan village to learn the utilization of information technology,” concluded Gus Tulang, founder of Petradesa, one of the visionaries spotlighted by the initiative.
