Developing potentials of children with Down syndrome through art

D

espite some negative perceptions in society, children with Down syndrome are capable of creativity and achievement. Many parents of children with Down syndrome lack confidence in their child’s potential, which can be disheartening.

Developing the skills of children with Down syndrome is not impossible, and they can learn various abilities, such as painting and drawing.

Audrina Surjaputri, the 15-year-old founder of Art & Soul, has demonstrated that children with Down syndrome possess abilities just like other children. An 11th grader at Jakarta Intercultural School, Audrina supports children with Down syndrome through drawing and painting activities under the Rumah Ceria Down Syndrome program, run by the Association of Parents of Children with Down Syndrome (Potads).

Many children at Rumah Ceria Down Syndrome learn to hone their skills in painting and drawing using watercolors. These activities are conducted regularly to help children develop their unique artistic styles. The program aims to provide a supportive environment where children with Down syndrome can explore their creativity and improve their abilities.

To further encourage and stimulate children with Down syndrome, Rumah Ceria Down Syndrome is holding a special drawing event that will take place over six days on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 25 to July 11, a consistent schedule designed to help children develop their skills.

The event’s goal is to help children with Down syndrome express their imagination through painting and drawing, transforming their efforts into tangible works of art. It also seeks to increase public awareness and understanding of Down syndrome by showcasing the capabilities and achievements of participating children.

In providing a platform for artistic expression, Rumah Ceria Down Syndrome plays a vital role in nurturing the potentials of children with Down syndrome, proving that with the right support, they can thrive in creating beautiful works of art.
