T Pertamina (Persero) has been recognized with 96 awards at the Indonesia Social Responsibility Award (ISRA) 2024 ceremony held on June 27 in Surakarta, Central Java, comprising 25 Platinum, 27 Gold, 34 Silver and 10 Bronze awards.
ISRA 2024 focused on sustainable solutions for addressing and mitigating climate change through its theme "Confronting Climate Change: Survive to Revive".
This theme is in line with the goals and priorities of Pertamina’s Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) programs, which focus particularly on contributing to the environment and climate change mitigation as an energy company.
"We must mitigate the challenges by facing climate change together, including through business actors carrying out CSER programs that involve the public," said Deputy Environment and Forestry Minister Alue Dohong.
Fadjar Djoko Santoso, Vice President Corporate Communication at Pertamina, said the energy company’s flagship CSER program was built on the three pillars of Economy, Environment and Society.
"The three pillars of the CSER program are intended to involve local communities, protect the environment and empower local economies so residents can manage the resources they have to improve their quality of life and welfare," Fadjar said.
He also said Pertamina was developing other initiatives to address climate change through a company-wide decarbonization and energy transition.
"Pertamina has realized scopes 1 & 2 to achieve 124 percent of its emissions reductions targets in 2023. Pertamina also has succeeded in decarbonizing 1.13 million tonnes of CO2e [carbon dioxide equivalent] from a total target of 910,000 tonnes of CO2e," he added.
Among the company’s CSER programs to receive a Platinum ISRA award was its Village Energy Independence (DEB) program, which gives communities access to clean energy to support local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) for added value in improving the welfare and economy of rural communities.
The DEB series currently covers 85 programs that have had positive impacts on 5,413 households, including 30 recipients of disability benefits, and have contributed to reducing emissions by 729,127 tonnes of CO2e per year.
"The DEB program has even had a multiplier effect by improving the local economy to reach Rp 2.8 billion [US$171,300] per year," Fadjar said.
The Energy School Independence program also received a Platinum award for developing education by providing theoretical and applied technologies for clean energy at Adiwiyata School, helping to raise its scholastic rankings through green innovations.
Another Platinum award-winning program is Pertamina’s Peatland Horticulture program. Under the guidance of the Sungai Pakning Pertamina Refinery Unit II, the program distributes clean energy to power water pumps in Bengkalis regency, Riau, so the local community can grow crops on peatlands.
ISRA 2024 also bestowed the Special Responsibility Person of the Year award to Julfi Hadi, President Director of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energi Tbk, the geothermal subsidiary of Pertamina Group.
