T

he Batam Business Agency (BP Batam) continues to develop Batu Ampar Port into an international transshipment hub. This progress is beginning to show results, with container traffic increasing by 7 percent, reaching approximately 313,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first half of 2024, compared to 293,000 TEUs in the first half of last year.

Dendi Gustinandar, director of BP Batam Port, stated that the increase in container traffic is detailed as follows: exports reached 116,000 TEUs and imports 114,000 TEUs, with 42,700 TEUs for unloading and 39,500 TEUs for loading.

Since Muhammad Rudi took office as Chairman of BP Batam in 2019, Batu Ampar Port has continued to progress, such as with the introduction of ship-to-shore (STS) Cranes, which began operations in 2023. These STS Cranes can unload up to 35 containers per hour, significantly more efficient than conventional equipment, which can unload 4-8 containers per hour, thus reducing the average docking time from 48-52 hours to 9-29 hours.

The latest developments at Batu Ampar Port include the groundbreaking of a 12-hectare container yard (CY) to increase capacity, the construction of a superstructure with the addition of four STS Cranes and 10 rubber tired gantry cranes (RTGs) and other productivity and connectivity enhancements.

Batu Ampar Port has also successfully opened a direct call route from Batam to China, marking a concrete step by BP Batam in realizing Batu Ampar Port as an international transshipment hub.
