Pertamina ramps up energy transition through Cilacap Green Refinery

T Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI), the refinery and petrochemical arm of oil and gas holding company Pertamina, continues to make progress in developing the Cilacap Green Refinery in Cilacap, West Java.
The National Strategic Project (PSN), which has a targeted maximum production capacity of 6,000 barrels of biofuel, is one of the flagship programs in Indonesia’s energy transition and aims to achieve the government’s goal of increasing the share of renewables in the national energy mix to 23 percent by 2025.
According to KPI corporate secretary Hermansyah Y. Nasroen, the Cilacap Green Refinery can address the challenge of producing more environmentally friendly products with its capacity to produce hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a type of biofuel.
In addition, the refinery can also produce bionaphtha and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), or bioavtur, from palm kernel oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorized, which is then coprocessed with fossil-based aviation turbine fuel (avtur).
“With its capability to process plant-based energy sources, the Cilacap Green Refinery project can provide value-added for the nation. This is further strengthened by KPI's experience and expertise in the refinery business as Pertamina's refinery and petrochemical subholding company,” Hermansyah said.
Cilacap Refinery is an integrated refinery that aligns with Indonesia’s energy transition, and is expected to increase its production capacity for HVO, SAF and bionaphtha products derived from used cooking oil (UCO) from 3,000 to 6,000 barrels per day.
Its new Green Refinery unit is to be equipped with supporting infrastructure including a palm oil treater, fractionator and offsite facilities.
Pertamina vice president corporate communication Fadjar Djoko Santoso said the Cilacap Green Refinery was poised to play a significant role in Indonesia’s energy transition through the production of environmentally friendly products.
“This green refinery project will have a positive impact by supporting the government's energy mix program and reducing emissions toward achieving net-zero,” Fadjar said.
As a Pertamina subsidiary, KPI operates its core business of oil and petrochemical processing in accordance with environment, social & governance (ESG) principles. KPI is also a registered participant in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and is committed to upholding the Ten Principles of the UNGC in its operational strategy as part of implementing ESG values.
