T Pertamina (Persero) showcased new innovations under the Energy Independent Village (DEB) program in Bondan hamlet, Cilacap regency, at the 25th Nusantara Effective Technology Showcase. The event was held by the Villages, Disadvantaged Regions and Transmigration Ministry on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara province, from July 14 to 17.

Pertamina corporate communications VP Fadjar Djoko Santoso said DEB was a Pertamina corporate social responsibility (CSR) program aimed at supporting energy resilience in rural areas with renewable energy, while also boosting village economies.

"The DEB program focuses on the utilization of clean energy according to the village's potential, thus also impacting energy resilience and independence in the area," Fadjar said.

Fadjar explained that Pertamina showcased the DEB program in Bondan hamlet, Ujungalang village, Kampung Laut district, Cilacap, at the Nusantara Appropriate Technology Showcase. Pertamina highlighted the innovations initiated in 2017 in DEB Cilacap, which was one of the pilot projects for clean energy use with Hybrid Energy One Pole (HEOP) technology, which combines solar cells and wind turbines. This technological innovation led to the creation of a Hybrid Power Plant utilizing wind turbines and solar panels, transforming Bondan Hamlet with reliable electricity.

For decades, Bondan Hamlet struggled with limited electricity access due to its remote location. Pertamina facilitated the Hybird Power Plant technology with a large capacity, consisting of 5 wind turbines and 24 solar panels, able to illuminate 78 houses and public facilities. The power plant is also used for fish farming and desalination efforts to make brackish water suitable for consumption.

Pertamina, through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Refinery Unit IV Cilacap, entrusted the local people with its management and ensuring the sustainability of the DEB operation. Bondan hamlet was designated as an Energy Independent Village (DME) in 2019, 2020 and 2021 by the Central Java Energy and Mineral Resources Agency and has received various other awards.

Fadjar added that Pertamina had implemented the DEB program in 85 locations across Indonesia. Pertamina has harnessed clean energy by utilizing five types of renewable energy: solar power, methane gas and biogas, micro-hydro power, biodiesel, as well as hybrid energy from solar and wind sources.

By the end of 2023, the DEB program had generated roughly 324,039 Watt peak (Wp) of renewable energy in the form of solar power, 609,000 cubic meters per year (m3/year) from methane gas, 16,500 Wp from a hybrid of solar and wind, 28,000 Watts from microhydro power, and 6,500 liters per year (L/year) from biodiesel. Pertamina's DEB program has successfully reduced carbon emissions by 729,127 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) per year.

"The DEB program will continue to be developed in [remote] villages with the hope that more villages can become energy-independent, positively impacting the economy and welfare of their communities," Fadjar said.
